Written By: Sammy Approved (@thecnsamuel)
Embark on the Next Wave this month with a true queen and lyrcist named Nesha Nycee. The St. Louis born artist has created a name for herself across the globe as an international star, who’s not letting up anytime soon. Read more about her journey and how she’s creating her path in music.
The Queen is here and her energy is truly infectious. If you have ever seen Nesha Nycee in action, you know exactly what we mean. The artist was born in St. Louis and raised in Atlanta, claiming her “St. Lanta” as the perfect blend of her unique upbringing.
This month we share ‘Next Wave’ artists, who gracefully “embark” on their path as superstars. Nesha would describe herself as “a true queen, who is constantly making something outta nothing.” She’s unapologetically coloring outside the lines.
“I was created to Create, and I am exactly what art is,” Nesha tells us.
In terms of creating a brand or name for herself, Nesha Nycee allows her energy to do the talking. She believes that people relate to her “authenticity, consistency and tenacity.”
I personally met this Queen many moons ago, performing around the city of Atlanta, constantly supporting artists carving out their own lanes and being a light amongst an often dark industry. Since then, her community has watched the continuous growth as she jet sets across the globe with her gifts.
“I’ve been able to evolve by constantly holding myself accountable also by keeping my creativity as open as possible by exploring different sounds, different collaborations,” she told us of her evolution. “I’ve been able to evolve by trial-and-error day to day experiences and by soaking up as much knowledge as possible.”
Nesha credits her energy to be her superpower and the gift that propels her and her art forward. While there are several artists to listen to in an ever-growing industry, Nesha realizes that her art is unique and for a community who appreciates it. Still, that doesn’t mean she hasn’t been discouraged on the journey.
“In a space where music is something everyone does now a days it can get discouraging no matter what stage of the game you’re at,” Nesha adds. “I just always stick to what works for me and what I feel like my core audience would enjoy building a community is really where you win more than ever.”
Nycee recently debuted her latest project Nutritional Facts, which is a Pop album boasting nine songs. Her singles “Trauma” and “Refreshed” have gained momentum on streaming, and it’s the first project she’s released since her project M.I.M.O.S.A in 2021.
Her music is meant to educate her community on how to live well and spread love. Nesha would say that her purpose is to cultivate a long lasting impact whernever and wherever she shows up.
“Everything about what I’m doing is ethereal and has purpose,” Nesha continued. “I’m not out here wasting words. I’m being intentional and leaving a lifelong lasting impact whenever I show up.”
Nesha’s journey started at the tender age of 9 years old. Music became a platform for her to use her voice, when she didn’t have one. She credits the people around her early on, who believed in her and ultimately, fueled her to believe in herself.
“Started recording at 12, and began performing at 16,” Nycee told us.
It was at the age of 17 when she got her first shot at an open mic to perform on Atlanta’s heritage radio station, V103. The rapper performed a battle live on air, and itw as the first time the world was able to experience her artistry for 9 weeks straight.
Nesha’s influences range from OutKast, The Dungeon Family, Queen Latifah, Eve, Nicki Minaj, Nipsey Hussle, Missy Elliott, Whitney Houston and so many more.
“Their fearless, bold messages and style is what permeates most for me and it has always inspired me,” she adds of her inspirations.
Nycee has had several opportunities to embark on her path as a successful artist. From her battle on V103 to freestyling on Sway in the Morning, the rapper is certainly leaving her mark.
“Getting the opportunity to interview and freestyle on Sway in the Morning is a childhood dream of mine that came true,” Nesha reminisces on her major career milestones so far. “Super blessed and still in disbelief.”
She also credits working with producers Zaytoven and Tasha Catour significant wins throughout her journey. Nycee landed a placements on popular TV series “Euphoria” and “P-Valley,” which she also notes as career highlights so far. There are so many impactful times throughout her career like getting her music video on BET and MTV and touring international to 7 countires.
“God is amazing,” she adds. “It just honestly makes me want to go harder to top those last accomplishments. ‘if I did that, I know I can do this’ type of attitude.”
The key for Nesha to continue topping her last win is self-mastery. She believes that in order to embark on her personal path to success, she must first hone in on each gift God has bestowed upon her.
“This is a season to really tap in to take it to a level I never imagined,” Nesha declares. “I see so many things for my myself and my brand. I will travel this entire globe impacting every soul I meet.”
And, so it shall be. Nesha offers a refreshing take on music, and she believes that it’s what the game has been missing for so long. She doesn’t use profanity in her music and fans can still enjoy her songs while turning up at the club.
Nesha’s formula to success is to keep going, keep God first and continue betting on herself. Yet, the most important key to her future is, “remaining humble.”
She’s most excited to cement her legacy, more major endeavors, continuous personal growth and building her audience around the world. As for those looking to create their own wave, Nesha’s advice is simple, “Keep God first.”
“You have to find out what your wave is what that means to you,” Nycee adds. “Because chasing after someone else’s wave you may drown. You have to learn as much information about this business as you can. You have to remain a student in this game and don’t take no for an answer. Make a way when there is none.”

How Music Distributors Impact Independent Artists
Written By: CJ Hall
In today's digital age, the music industry has gone through a huge transformation, giving independent artists a shit ton of different platforms and ways to share their music with the world around us. However, navigating this complex industry isn’t always an easy feat if you are pushing for a wider audience reach. One key player in the ecosystem that emerging artists should get super acquainted with are music distributors.
What is a Music Distributor?
Distributors play a big role in the music industry, particularly for emerging artists looking to release and monetize their music without the backing of a major record label.
A music distributor acts as a dot connector between independent artists and major streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and more. They take care of the logistics of getting your music onto these platforms, ensuring that artists can focus on their craft rather than the annoying intricacies of distribution.
Key Functions of Music Distributors
Distribution to Digital Platforms
As we mentioned earlier, music distributors assist with the placement of tracks on various streaming services and online stores. By tapping into their established relationships with these platforms, distributors ensure that an artist’s music is widely available, maximizing their reach and potential revenue.
Revenue Collection
Collecting royalties and payments from multiple streaming platforms and digital sales can be so horrifying for independent artists. Distributors streamline this process by combining earnings from different sources and providing artists with a single payment, making financial management a smoother process.
Metadata Management
Accurate metadata is essential for tracking plays and ensuring proper royalty payments. Distributors manage and verify all metadata associated with music tracks, including artists names, track titles, album information, and International Standing Recording Codes (ISRC), which identifies individual sound recordings and music videos by a unique number.
Choosing the Right Distributor
When selecting a distributor, artists should consider factors such as cost, services offered, and reputation. Popular distributors like DistroKid, TuneCore, and Soundcloud each offer unique features and benefits. Comparing these options can help uncover the best fit for an artists’ needs.
Many independent artists have found significant success through distribution services. For example, the story of Chance the Rapper stands out in the rapidly evolving music industry. His critically acclaimed mixtape, Acid Rap, catapulted him to stardom showcasing the strong impact of digital distribution.
In Conclusion
Music distributors play an indispensable role in the success of independent artists. By handling distribution logistics, managing royalties, and providing valuable promotional support, distributors empower artists to reach global audiences and achieve their musical aspirations. As the music industry continues to evolve, the importance of music distributors will only grow, offering even more opportunities for independent artists to unlock their full potential.
Artists looking to take their music careers to the next level should explore various distribution options and leverage these services to enhance their reach and impact. By choosing the right distributor, artists can focus on what they do best – creating music – while ensuring their work is heard around the world.
Power in Sunni Colon’s New Single, Dream About You All Through The Night
Written By: CJ Hall
Sunni Colón makes an exciting return with a new track and visuals, "Dream About You All Through the Night," powerfully blending vulnerability with emotional depth and strength to create a resonant and euphoric experience for his listeners.
Sunni captivated us with his last project, JúJú & The Flowerbug in 2022 and has been maintaining a low profile since. Now he delights fans with a first taste of new work, rearming his status as an artist. The new single pairs 70s lush instrumentation with introspective lyrics that dive into themes of love and longing.
In Dream About You All Through the Night, Colón continues to articulate his personal philosophy of living in the moment, drawing inspiration from life experiences, particularly emphasizing the power of love and connection. “Creation stems from vulnerability. That openness we unlock reveals purity and sets the tone for honesty,” he says in an interview.
The Los Angeles native has seamlessly blended genres, drawing from jazz, R&B, soul, and electronic influences to craft a dynamic sound proving he is a multifaceted storyteller.
He describes his creative process as drawing from various forms of music and life experiences, which he believes brings a unique purity to his artistry. The versatility is unmistakable in earlier songs like, “Technicolor” and “Mornin Dew;” both dynamic pieces that capture the essence of a transparent and fresh listening experience.
In the accompanying visuals, Colón puts on his director’s hat taking viewers on a journey to Rio De Janeiro where he spends the day in the neighborhood among locals. The use of dierent colors and nostalgic romanticism reflect the warming tones present in his music, adding layers of depth and emotion.
While Sunni Colón remains lowkey about details on any potential upcoming projects, "Dream About You All Through The Night" maintains the essence of older albums like, Satin Psicodelic. Stay tuned for updates from the emerging multihyphenate, and in the meantime, dive into his latest single and its captivating video.
Next Wave: Kiya Lacey
Written By: Sammy Approved | @thecnsamuel
Singer, songwriter, DJ and entrepreneur Kiya Lacey is a force to be reckoned with. Her tenacity as an artist and businesswoman pushes her beyond the pulse of music into her own stratosphere.
The alt-R&B singer has always kept her sound and look inventive. Kiya Lacey is a unique talent with several gifts, who has finally stepped into each one of her talents seamlessly. As a singer, songwriter, curator, DJ and business owner, Kiya reveals that faith and community has allowed her to evolve.
“I got to give it to God first,” Lacey shared. “I really have been guided to build strong support and community both online and IRL [in real life]! I study a lot, and I take a lot of risks. I am so thankful for an audience that learns and grows with me.”
The Nashville bred talent first started putting out her own music in middle school. She performed at local shows throughout the birthplace of country music. While Kiya birthed a community for Rodeo way before Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, the trendsetter can hop out the saddle and straight into any genre she pleases.
“I honestly feel like the most common genre I’m put in is Alt-r&b,” Kiya said of how fans classify her sound. “People have said ‘haunted strip club music’ which I honestly think is so hot!”
Kiya’s fans are accustomed to everything when it comes to consuming her music. If you’re new here, don’t try to put the singer in a box.
“I am building a community of open minded ‘alternative’ listeners. I experiment with all genres truly,” she adds.
In terms of influences, Lacey has several who have influenced her sound, style and approach to creation.
“Grace Jones, style glamour ICON,” she lists off her inspirations. “Bjork, vocal arrangements, costumes, and she also is a fye DJ! Erykah Badu, the queen come on NOW the songwriting, style, and SHE also DJs, Celia Cruz, Missy Elliot, Beyonce, Rihanna, Pharrell Williams, James Blake, FKA Twigs, Travis Scott… I could go on and on.”
Lacey weaves all of these artists into one common theme, which is “the ability to be a undeniable force. All multifaceted, no boundaries!” Just like her.
The moment that cemented Kiya as a powerhouse early on was when she won a competition that allowed her to open for legendary R&B singer and actress Brandy.
“I won a competition to open for Brandy and that really started the buzz,” Lacey continued. “I became the first woman on Nashville’s Red Bull Sound Select in 2015. Then was a finalist for the first Afropunk battle of the bands Atlanta like 2016? I believe!? That motivated me to move here [Atlanta]!”
Other significant career highlights for Kiya include, her impressive “The 6” EP rollout with sponsorship from Red Bull, touring with several female musicians as a DJ, working with one of her inspirations, FKA Twigs, for we are the womxn project at Blue Flame strip club in Atlanta, casting Rico Nasty’s “STFU” video, getting her business Fruta Mami booked for an upcoming showcase at Urban Outfitters called “Discover Puerto Rico,” and putting on her own headlining show at Aisle 5.
These are just a few highlights that have inspired her to keep moving forward. Lacey wears a number of hats, and each moment encourages her to remember she’s moving in the right direction.
This month’s “Next Wave” theme is Power. Everyone has a unique gift and personal superpower. Kiya reveals that hers is tenacity. After moving from one music capital to the next, several career pivots and personal woes, the Atlanta based multi-talented artist has the willpower to keep it rolling.
“I am so determined to bring my ideas to life. That truly is a gift I hold dear to my heart,” Kiya shared of her unique gift.
Kiya is one of the most unconventional talents in music today. She has always prided herself on carving out her own space in an industry of mainstream hits.
“I really have always wanted to be in my own lane and do what’s best for my heart,” Lacey shared. “I really look at music as a self-expression and I don’t approach it in a ‘let’s get a radio hit.’ I really just want to share how I feel and experiment with sounds!”
As tenacious as Kiya is, she is not afraid to take a breather from her craft. She has since poured her creativity into other artforms like DJ’ing.
“I recently started DJing both in support of women, who need tour support and independently,” Lacey shared of how she takes time away from her personal music. “That artistic expression allowed me to fall back in love with music and STUDY. I also get to test out new records in social settings live on stage.”
While Kiya understands the importance of making a name for herself, crafting her own sound and brand identity, she also believes collaboration is the key to success.
“It’s important to create your own sound, brand, and identity to ensure success but I honestly think more people should come together,” Lacey shared. “We are so much stronger in this industry when we genuinely support each other.”
Power is defined as, “the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events.” Kiya has certainly left an imprint on the music industry with her innovative approach to music making and branding.
“I definitely motivate my friends to keep going and diversify the bag,” she humbly declares. “It’s so wild cause I definitely see my influence in style, hair, vocal arrangement, and even brand strategy sometimes.”
When it comes to Lacey’s approach to creating, marketing her music and sharing with the world, she attributes brainstorming sessions to helping her bring her vision to life. More specifically, she always keeps a journal to write down her ideas.
Right now, her favorite journal reads: “Don’t overthink this shit.” Kiya’s partner Malcolm designed these custom journals, which has served as a reminder for her to be present and visualize her future.
“We actually sit down and discuss all of our ideas big, small, present day or future goals,” Lacey added. “That’s really helped me bring them to life!”
Kiya’s excited to continue creating, traveling and seeing more of the world.
“I love touring and seeing the world,” Lacey shared of what’s next for her. “I love to be able to support my family and friends. I want financial freedom for us all.”
As for the artists still forging their own unique pathways in music, Lacey leaves us with this advice.
“Lock in. Really LOCK IN. You have to really focus in on yourself. Forget the comparisons and try new things,” Kiya shared. “Don’t let one set back hold you down. You are capable of achieving your wildest dreams. Prioritize mental health. Stay true to yourself.”
Be sure to follow Kiya Lacey for more music, events, and delicious FRUTA
Exploring the Power of Music During Black Mental Health Awareness Month
July kicks off Black Mental Health Awareness Month, and we’d be remiss if we didn’t shine a light on the healing power of music. Beyond its entertainment value and the special place it holds in our hearts, music has a ton of psychological benefits that have been celebrated globally throughout time.
Behind The Music
According to research by the American Psychiatric Association, even passive listening to the same song daily can play a big role in mood regulation and influences a positive human stress response.
Have you ever taken notice of how certain sounds, tones, and melodies heighten our senses? Slow, syncopated rhythms, for instance, trigger a release of dopamine and serotonin neurotransmitters within our brain and bodies, positively feeding our brain’s reward system and making us feel good.
Lyricism adds another layer of impact. Words are transformed through the listener’s perspective, empowering them to reflect on their own experiences, face challenges, and find strength in their struggles.
Over the years artists who share personal battles and victories through their work have proven power in vulnerability. Their artistry brings people together and is a huge example of how we all must face resilience in our human experience. In honor of Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, check out and add these 5 songs by artists carrying the tradition of bringing harmony and balance through their work.

Teezo Touchdown - Familiarity
“Familiarity” by Teezo Touchdown is as real as it gets. The song is raw and opens up with an annoyance for Mondays, expressing feelings of being overworked and underappreciated. NEXT WAVE: BILL$
Written By: Sammy Approved | @thecnsamuel
Detroit rapper Bill$ is making waves for himself with pretty girl music, sounds to play on a sunny day and songs dedicated to loved ones. The next wave comes with a powerful presence fit for this month’s theme. Read more about how he makes music for himself, how he found power in the pivot and his personal formula to success.
Bill$ has carved out a sound that is unique to him and his experience. There’s some Midwest and East Coast influences peeking through Bill$’s music, which he’s surely gained inspiration from his upbringing in Detroit, Michigan and his time spent pursuing his undergraduate studies at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
“I have a degree in Biology from Howard and yet somehow I’m rapping and making it happen,” the rapper shared with us about his resilience.
As an artist, Bill$ finds inspiration by one of music’s biggest acts, Drake. He specifically draws to how Drake navigated the industry early on in his career. Bill$ finds Drake’s adaptability impactful, and he chooses to lean into that when it comes to making his own wave.
“I think his versatility is what shows up most in my music,” Bill$ shares about Drake’s artistic influence.
Bill$ has created a name for himself since his early days as a DJ. He speaks to the challenges he faced early on while transitioning from DJ to artist. Thought it was difficult for him to gain the respect and recognition, it seems he has finally found his way.
“I first got into music by being a DJ so at first it was pretty hard to get people to respect me as an artist,” Bill$ shared. “Now, I feel more people recognize me as an artist especially since I take myself and my art more serious than I did when I first started rapping.”
His consistency is admirable. Bill$ drops singles regularly, delivering clever lines over cinematic beats. His latest single “Cool” has an infectious sample that makes you want to hit your money dance. With one album titled $ponsorship Dolla$ released back in 2022 to on EP dedicated to the Pretty Girls, Bill$ is just getting started. As we are writing this, Bill$ has already announced his next single “Pocket Dropping” with artist Ocho on July 3.
Bill$’s star is rising with impressive Spotify listenership to end 2023. With over 184k streams, 39.5k listeners in 150 countries, he describes his community as “anyone who likes good music and wants to see the next star being made.”
Still, Bill$ makes music for himself first, and whoever else likes it is “just a plus.” He shares a few keys to his success so far, citing failure, focus and the freedom to create as the formula to navigating the business.
“I see the good in any situation,” Bill$ comments on his personal superpower. “There’s always somebody in a worst situation than yours so I always try to remember that and be grateful for my situation.”
He goes on to share that failure has been instrumental to his evolution as an artist saying, “really failure, I’ve only gotten from my mistakes and mishaps.”
Bill$ keeps the focus on the quality of his music. With a wide selection of new music and artists fans can choose from, Bill$ makes sure to stay ahead of the curve, creating noteworthy music that represents him and not “just a trendy sound.”
“I don’t like many people, soooooo it’s super important for niggas to know we are not the same,” Bill$ shares confidently of how he’s separate from the rest. “I’m also very competitive and I wanna be the best. That’s how you don’t get stuck in a box and grouped with people you actually have nothing in common with musically.”
Bill$ recommends a book titled Steal Like An Artist,” which discusses how nothing is new under the sun. When carving out a lane for himself, Bill$ recognizes that he must pull from his most authentic self, which is a culmination of all the music that’s come before him.
“Like the first table was just a large rock, somebody just made it wood and added legs,” Bill$ shared. “I feel like that’s how music is, I’m not looking to bring anything new because honestly I wouldn’t be giving you an authentic version of me.”
His formula to success is keeping content at the center. Bill$ credits being active with the success he’s seen so far. Once he started taking himself serious and treating himself as a rapper, he began to see true progress.
The gifted rapper has already made an impact on his peers since beginning his artist journey.
“My birthday is in July, and as a Leo this just makes sense to me,” Bill$ share about this months theme, Power. “I’d say I’ve influenced my peers to go for what they want. Most of my friends still don’t get it but I just think their not crazy enough about their dreams like I am.”
Despite personal misfortunes in his life, like losing his mom last year, Bill$ credits his little brother as his biggest inspiration to get up and “grind every day.” The rapper says making money is his favorite thing to do. So, it’s no surprise that even in the midst of heartbreak, he puts in the work to pursue his dreams.
“I really show too much love to people and I should stop but if I did then I wouldn’t be me,” Bill$ speaks to his solid, loving character.
In terms of his personal highlights, Bill$ was recently featured on music platform, “Ontheradar,” which he considers a major career highlight.
“Ontheradar was a big moment for me, I got a lot of new fans from that so I’m forever grateful for that,” he shares. “Other than that I’d have to say my most powerful career highlight is losing my mom, I feel like that turned me into my most vulnerable self and let me see things from a different perspective rather it’s good or bad.”
Turning pain into power is a unique and admirable skill that Bill$ embodies. That’s another trait that makes him a power player and the next wave in music.
As for his most powerful play yet, Bill$ believes a feature from an underground artist would push him farther.
“A feature from an underground artist would turn me up,” he shared. “Someone like Joony, KP SKYWALKA, or Babyfxce E. I think the next step for me is just expanding my fan base. I want the world to hear my music.”
As for what’s next, he is excited for the music to reach more listeners. Bill$ is confident that his next opportunity is right around the corner. For aspiring artists trying to find their own wave in music, Bill$ returns to a note we’ve heard before.
“Just be you. What’s for you will be for you and what’s not, won’t,” he eloquently concludes out interview.
4 Music Business Keys Artists Should Learn to Win
Written By: Kierstyn Pryor
While creating and cultivating an innovative musical experience for listeners is always important , if you are lacking knowledge about business it can be fairly difficult to acquire success. In an industry that often challenges you and limit your creativity it is imperative that you develop skills necessary to thrive in your career. Gaining knowledge in the music business can open doors for legacy and longevity as a writer, producer, singer, rapper, and more.
Copyright
As an artist you want to always make sure that you and your music is secured and protected. The primary way to protect your music is to make sure that no one else has rights to profit off of or receive credit from your music.
Copyright is fairly simple, however this has been the downfall for a few artists believe it or not. Copyrighting is the act of entering your personal information and song and/or albums information into a database in order to ensure that you are the person that owns full rights to the song. The interesting part about copyrighting is that even if you have valid proof on paper that has your name, the name of the song and date that you wrote it , someone else has the ability to receive credit for the song if they copyrighted it prior to your knowledge. The law will say that the song rightfully belongs to the person who copyrighted the song first. This is why it is very important to copyright your music!
Entertainment law
To know entertainment law is to know protection . With the existence of copyright, royalties, sync, and distribution it’s only fair that laws regarding music are formed. In the music industry many things can occur such as people not properly handling copyrights and split sheets , to minor miscommunications and misunderstandings. Furthermore, the music industry involves collaboration and many contracts. If you are unable to determine the impact of such contracts and agreements you could be in danger. Therefore, even if you aren’t able to understand laws and contracts it’s important to always have someone trustworthy on your team that does.
PROS & Royalties
Performing rights organizations (PRO’s) are the primary source of artists receiving income and royalties for their work. Many of which you have heard of such as ASCAP, BMI, SESAC allow many of our favorite artists to be paid from sales of the music we love. While they all offer the same service, it is always important to know more about platforms before you sign agreements. Researching and reading over services prior to choosing a PRO is necessary. It is also necessary to understand more about how they will service you as an artist and in case of an emergency or complication, how they will prioritize your creative process, money, and reputation.
Promotion, PR, Marketing
Advertising your brand as an artist can be difficult for a new artist. This task takes consistency and effort. However, it is very important to learn if an artist desires to secure a spot in the limelight. There are multiple things one must learn to promote themselves. The first thing you must know is your core audience and how to best present yourself. Listeners love authenticity and they grab a hold of whatever you give them . What are you giving your listeners? Are you inspiring them, misleading them, or entertaining them? It is important to authentically engage your audience and check the metrics of your social engagement to see which aspects of your creativity they gravitate to the most. It is also essential to receive media training to ensure that your communication and ability to answer questions during interviews are up to par. This is simple, however, many artists go wrong when they neglect very important things while focusing heavily on their creative process. Learning more about how to present and market yourself will put you many steps ahead of the game and make you stand out in the music business!
Navigating the tools and ways to learn these skills can be very challenging. One of the main keys to gathering this knowledge is building a network of people that you can trust and ask questions whenever you necessary. Another way to utilize resources and learn these skills is to do as much research on the topic and reach out to other artists and experts to see what works best. Last but not least, trial and error is the biggest thing when it comes to doing anything in life. We all have experienced getting our “feet wet” and embarking on a journey that we know little to nothing about. We hope that you embrace this journey! We wish you the best of luck in your endeavors and hope that you continue to gain knowledge throughout your journey as an emerging creative!

Not only does the song leave room for us to get to know the lyrics, but also unforgettable ad libs. Coco Jones is known for the richness in her voice and ability to create ad libs that will never leave your mind. This is what soul sounds like.
Same Mistake - Destin Conrad Feat. Alex Isely
It's not a soul song without the voice of Alex isely and it isn't lyrically intriguing if it doesn't have Destin Conrad in it! These two linked up to collaborate on a new song, “Same Mistake” a soulful song highlighting a complicated relationship between two lovers. Destin croons about wanting to further pursue a relationship with his lover while Alex declares that their intimacy were only momentary for her, and she has no desire to pursue the romance. While Isley is known for her soft and delightful tone, Destin is known to go viral for his impeccable production in his music and lyricism. The song is highly relatable and the visuals offer a vintage nostalgia that perfectly accompanies the song. A collaboration so great makes us want to hear and see more from the dynamic duo!
Beggin’ - Amaria
Born in Tampa Florida, Amaria began her musical journey in 2020 as a teenager with the single, “Morning”. Now in 2024 she is taking over with her new track, “Beggin’. With 686.4 K monthly listeners on Spotify, not only does the singer harbor soothing vocal abilities but also keen knowledge about instrumentation. Her very first single along with others were self-produced, she knows how to gather an audience through her musicality and technique. “Beggin” has very reminiscent tones to that of past musicians such as Sade and Erykah Badu. The musical elements are unforgettable and exude the meaning of true soul which is why it deserves a spot on any soul playlist!
The summer is just not right without a playlist to score the memories. While there are a plethora of new songs to choose from everyday, these picks are the ones that will guide your chill summer days perfectly into soulful summer nights.
Next Wave: Neila
Written By: Sammy Approved @thecnsamuel
Multifaceted artist Neila shares how her dynamic journey and authenticity has allowed her to thrive in an oversaturated music market. The talented rising star wears several hats as a singer, songwriter and recording artist. While some might label her an R&B singer and others may call her Pop, she prefers “R&POP.”
The gifted singer debuted her latest single, “Receipts” in April 2024. She released her last project Bite Me, Bitch in 2023, which features her hit single, “Impatient” with Capella Grey.
Neila, which is alien spelled backwards, aims for “world domination.” The South Florida artist continues to break barriers by building an unstoppable brand that feels authentic to who she is. Neila credits her authenticity to what, “keeps [her] brand alive.”
More recently, she landed a huge campaign with designer fragrance brand Mugler’s “Alien Hypersense,” which perfectly coincides with the brand she’s been building over the years.
When asked about the collaboration, she notes that, “It honestly fell in my lap. Perfect alignment.”
Despite her stage name’s foundation, the otherworldly songstress hails from planet Earth -- South Florida to be exact. Neila pays homage to her Jamaican and Bajan heritage as a first generation American, who was immersed in rich culture. Her style, cadence, and charisma oozes with the ethos of her Caribbean roots.
Neila has perfectly carved out a lane for herself, but she also has a “melting pot” of influences that she has studied over the years.
“I got into The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Queen when I was very young, like in middle
school,” Neila shared of her inspirations. “Their freedom of expression and their
seemingly lack of desire to blend in have always inspired me.”
She goes on to share that her influences expanded to artists like Pharrell Williams,
Missy Elliott and Tyler, the Creator, who have been “consistent sources of inspiration
musically, fashion-wise and artistically.”
When admiring Neila’s artistry, fans can’t deny the consistency and how she stretches
herself creatively to build a strong aesthetic and name for herself. The green hair, over-
the-top editorial looks, and originality speaks for itself.
“Blending music with fashion and aligning my art with a storyline are very important to
me,” Neila said of her mission through art and storytelling.
Neila attributes her knack for branding and creating a name for herself to attending college for music business. The singer made sure that she got her money’s worth for her degree and has been putting it to use ever since.
“I soaked up everything I could from those classes and applied it to myself and my brand,” she shared. “I study artists who’s branding really makes an impact. Everything connects and tells a bigger story.”
She also credits her stellar planning and organizational skills as the two keys to her success so far.
“I'm a huge planner! I can't stress that enough. Organization is key,” Neila shared.
The journey has not been short and sweet. Fans may see a flourishing brand now, but Neila has been working independently for years to make her dreams a reality. As a journalist and media personality, I have personally witnessed her evolution.
“Over the years, as I've discovered more and more about myself, I've incorporated it into my artistry,” Neila shares of her evolution. “I don't take ‘breaks’ from making music. I just keep going. I have hundreds of demos that may never be heard, but that consistency has made me a better songwriter, singer, and visual artist.”
This journey wasn’t short of insecurities and what some may consider “L’s,” but Neila explains why this made her a better songwriter and overall, a great recording artist.
“I used to be insecure about my writing ability when I first started making music,” Neila revealed. “At the beginning, I didn't have anyone to help me. So, out of necessity, I wrote and wrote. Now, I would consider myself a writer – it's one of my favorite things to do.”
She goes on to add how her online presence may appear to look effortless, but it hasn’t been a walk in the park. Neila works tirelessly to thrive as an artist and human being. She has recently been more candid online about the struggles that come with pursuing her dreams.
“I grind hard, the tears flow, the doubts creep in. All normal stuff,” Neila revealed. “I just wanted to be more transparent. People keep asking what label I'm signed to, and I gotta
be clear: my team and I are doing this all ourselves. Just imagine what we can achieve with a major label behind us!”
Neila expresses that her authenticity is how she’s been able to thrive and innovate in an oversaturated industry, where music is infinite. As a spiritual and multidimensional artist, she explains that with “Pluto in Aquarius, it’s time to forget the inauthentic, façade nonsense and just be yourself.”
As an intentional artist, she credits the universe for gifting her with ideas in her music and campaigns.
“I'm constantly receptive, so creative sparks or entire songs often just download into my head,” Neila revealed. “From there, I follow that creative current.”
In terms of her creative process, like many artists, she lives for a mood board.
“Pinterest is my go-to, and recently I've been using Canva to create decks as well,” Neila adds. “Sometimes, I'll even sketch ideas in my journal. I'm a big planner – the more I plan, the smoother the execution, organization, and release of my art into the world.”
With the rapid technological changes, she also urges artists to stay on top of technology if they want to thrive in the ever-changing market.
“Innovation and technology are going to be huge for the next 20 years,” she shared. “Get used to AI and use it to your advantage.”
Neila aims to take over the world with her music and beyond. She hopes to one day partner with a major label and continue studying her favorites like Tyler, The Weeknd, Travis Scott, and Kanye, who have been able to market their projects with the majors.
“The details, the way everything connects and leads back to the music and message,” Neila shares of their marketing strategies. “It's incredible.”
She also uses Beyoncé as another example of “top-notch marketing and storytelling.”
“Of course, I'm independent right now, so I can't pull off a Beyoncé or Weeknd budget,” Neila shared. “But I do what I can at the creative level the artist I mentioned do it and I'm lucky to work with some incredible creatives. Having a team that understands and believes in you as an artist is crucial.”
Neila’s team extends beyond her music and goes on to her support including family, friends and her spiritual team: God.
“Being supported helps you to keep going and stay focused,” Neila shared with love and gratitude.
Beyond the music, Neila aspires to thrive in her personal life through “peaceful relaxation.” She prioritizes time with family to recharge her soul. When she’s not creating music, she’s hitting the trails or soaking up some sun by the water like a true Caribbean queen.
“Nature’s my happy place,” Neila shared. “That's where I truly thrive.”
Neila also shared helpful tools and resources that allow her to restore balance and continue to thrive in and out of her career. She credits exercise, her spiritual routine and high-vibrational literature to maintaining her overall well-being.
“My mornings and nights are structured around a spiritual routine. Before checking my phone, I prioritize prayer, affirmations, meditation, and visualization,” Neila shared. “I’m an avid reader, particularly drawn to spiritual and self-help books. Sometimes I revisit the same book multiple times, finding new meaning at different stages in my life. Consuming high-vibrational literature and positive affirmations nourishes my mind and counterbalances the negativity that can permeate social media.”
For new listeners, Neila welcomes you with open arms. She believes her music community is made for “free thinkers.”
“I strive to create anthems that inspire listeners to feel confident and capable of achieving anything they set their minds to,” Neila offered.
Neila is most excited for new listeners to discover her music and she hopes to make them all fans.
“I dream of millions around the globe connecting with it [music],” Neila shared. “I'm incredibly grateful for my current fanbase, the 'Invaders,' and I'm ready to use my music to uplift and heal even more people. Philanthropy is another huge passion, and I can't wait to expand my efforts in that area. World-renowned artist, fashion icon, philanthropist – that's the vision!”
To continue to support Neila, be sure to share her music, add your favorites to your playlists and spread the word to your family and friends that your new favorite indie artist is an alien from outer space.
“Every little bit helps this dream come true,” Neila concludes our interview. Be sure to stream and purchase Neila’s latest single, “Receipts” here.

Next Wave: Old Orleans
Written By: Sammy Approved | @ChelseaSamuel
An artist with no bounds or limits, Old Orleans is the next wave. The New Orleans bred rapper, creative architect and master wordsmith has cultivated a space in music that allows him to thrive alongside the greats. With community, by living in his truth and utilizing all his gifts, Old Orleans has unlocked his personal cheat code.
The talented artist began creating and releasing his own music three years ago, but his creative pursuits go way back. Though he feels “like a baby” in the game, fans wouldn’t notice by his mature pen and masterfully curated sound.
“As far as just being a creative, I’ve been making art all my life,” Old Orleans comments on his creative journey. “My biggest thing is to just always start. That’s it. Not just saying ‘oh yea I want to get into this new thing’ but feeling not fully equipped or qualified to do so. Just go create and figure out how to get better as you go, and that’s how I’ve evolved. Constantly showing up for myself on a regular basis.”
Old Orleans is how he refers to his brand. He credits the name as a “playground,” where he visits to create in whichever medium he desires. Some of his friends may know him as Uncle Roy or just Ro. Old Orleans is the way he identifies creatively saying, “On a more metaphorical note, Old Orleans is an embodiment of artistic ventures that has no bounds or limits.”
In three years, Old Orleans has released four albums and several singles and EPs. Most recently, he released the “Don’t You Know Freestyle” with frequent collaborator Akeem Ali in March 2024. Old Orleans debuted his latest full length project Magnolia Symphony with producer Don Carrera back in December 2023. The nine-track project takes you on a ride from beginning to end, where he shares witty double entendres that will likely have to run back to fully grasp what he’s saying.
As fans experience the Old Orleans sound and visual aesthetic, they will definitely find inspiration from 70’s Soul, Disco and R&B like Con Funk Shun. They might also hear notes of 90’s Hip Hop stylings from artists like Camp Lo. Old Orleans mixes his love and influence he feels from the East to the West coast. Most importantly, his sound takes listeners on a journey through his city of New Orleans.
“I’m a gumbo pot of creativity,” he shared.
Old Orleans makes music for fans of Hip Hop and true lyricism. He says that his music is “for the people who like to chill but not be too cool to be goofy.” Those fans who aren’t afraid of vulnerability.
“You could throw me on a playlist full of 2009 blog era rappers and I’d blend in beautifully like I’d been making music since then,” he adds of his sound.
Uncle Roy realizes that showing up as his most authentic self is how he continues to not only exist but evolve. He emphasizes that he doesn’t have a desire to be perfect but hopes to show up in his truth while becoming better each day.
“Who I am online is who I am in person,” Roy declares. “I’m not trying to sell the idea of something to anyone.”
What comes naturally to Old Orleans, doesn’t necessarily come easily for most artists in the game. Real is rare, but Unc is here to remind us of our unique gifts in the world.
“The only thing I’ve been placed here to do is to remind people that your purest form of self is the most unique blessing you’ve been given to utilize through life,” he adds. “People will wholeheartedly appreciate and support you for being you.”
As an artist, Old Orleans manages to use all his gifts as a multi-hyphenate creative. When speaking on his process, he creates through problem solving. Since we met back in 2015, Roy spent his early days behind the camera capturing timeless photographs for other beloved artists like DC Young Fly, notable brands such as Base Butter, and his own self- portraits. All which authentically speak to who he and his subjects are in real life. He still wears this photographer hat to assist in sharing his own stories through music.
“I’m a visual artist first, and I understood while making music and releasing music is fun, no one will find it if you don’t put out any visuals,” Roy shared the importance of creating aesthetically pleasing visuals to accompany his sound. “So, I started shooting my own visuals that felt unique to my sound. Then I started to do more collabs with people I respect in music as well and that’s what helped create my lane that works specifically for the goals I have in this art form.”
Old Orleans credits relationship building to how he’s cultivated his online community. He discovered the most effective way to create an experience for his fans, which helps them to engage with his music digitally. The gifted artist hasn’t fully fleshed out his live experience, but he’s mastered a way to draw support online with several viral moments to prove it.
“You have to have a “product” that people want to feel apart of,” Roy educates us. “I haven’t performed live yet because I haven’t fully figured out that experience in person for people, but I’ve figured out what online experiences look like.”
The marketing mastermind shared what works best for him. The Old Orleans community appreciates his cohesive storytelling through captivating visuals and bars to pair.
“Every time I make a song I create a short video of the song that feels like a world where people can enjoy not just the music but the art of the environment I’ve placed them in,” he adds. “Once an audience of people feel welcome in my space, then I know they will
understand and appreciate me as an artist even more because they’ll feel connected to me. It’s relationship building at a massive scale, but it’s still just being genuine to yourself.”
When asked how Roy manages to wear so many hats (many of which we haven’t even covered), he answers with faith, community, and grounding.
“I’m constantly reminded by God and my community to go outside and touch grass, in a literal and metaphorical way,” he notes. “I create all day even when I’m not physically touching something, but I can only be inspired to do better if I put down the devices and engage with the people and things I love outside of making art. The world is art, so I have to remind myself to go look at the art outside of my own little world that I’m cultivating.”
Old Orleans acknowledges how hard it is to step outside of his own world sometimes but recognizes the impact it can have on how artists create and express.
“It gets hard to leave my own world sometimes because it’s fun over here,” he adds. “But what’s better is when you get to see all the other universes out there that allow the colors in your life to expand further.”
Roy thrives as an artist and creator through his knack for cultivating community and by staying authentic to himself, his art and recognizing the importance of personal evolution.
“Community to me is most important especially when the entire community is talented and can connect in more ways than I’ve imagined,” he shared. “I love being able to connect the dots all across the board to help people grow no matter how big or small they are.”
This is evident in his collaborations with other gifted artists like Ali, Carrera and Atlanta based artist Mudy. Old Orleans surrounds himself with like-minded creators, who are also living and creating by the same code of authenticity and pure talent.
“I stay authentic to my true self and understand how to evolve over time,” Old Orleans reminds us of how he flourishes in an oversaturated market. “The key is just having fun and not settling for whatever anyone else wants for you, but to remain true to the reason on why you create in the first place. As long as I’m always walking the path of peace and self- fulfillment, then I’ll always be satisfied with the fruits of my labor.”
Most recently, being authentic and sharing in community has blessed Old Orleans with a sync placement on “The Chi.” When asked how that opportunity came about, he gives credit to artist Remey Williams.
“He pretty much put that in rotation for me, ran down how music syncing worked and we got to it,” Roy shared. “Never imagined I’d have music on TV, and yet here we are. That was a dope moment for sure.”
With just three years under his belt, Old Orleans is happily here to stay. He hopes that he continues to build authentic and long-lasting relationships through music and beyond.
“I’m still new to it all, and I’m working with people I’ve been fans of before I even thought about making music,” he shared. “It’s just nice to be apart of the conversation of great artists out there now.”
Continue to support Old Orleans by sharing his music and content across social media, sending to friends and family, and purchasing merchandise when it becomes available.

5 Things Every Emerging Artist Must Know
Written By: Kierstyn Pryor
In a world where music is the forefront of entertainment and constantly shifting, it is important that emerging artists keep up with the ever-changing industry. As a rising artist there is nothing more important than finding new ways to captivate your audience and listeners. However, this can be challenging with the current demand of new sounds and a world of social standards. It is imperative that new and upcoming artists stay in the loop about business, new trends, and endless new counts of creativity. One way to do so is research but another way is to take heed of every opportunity to learn. If you are an emerging artist here is how you keep your sound and creativity in demand. Here are five transformative things every emerging artist must know to keep their sound and brand relevant!
Business
An artist's job is to stand on what exactly? That's right, BUSINESS! As artists, it's easy to sing, rap, write, and create because it is natural to you. You create day in and day out without thinking twice about whether or not it feels good to you. Through endless creativity , your willingness to protect yourself and learn about the business aspect of your craft, for some, can become lackluster. However, you shouldn't let it. Business is just as important as the creative process. As artists it can be easy to become silenced by the executives, business owners, and leaders around you that keep you in the limelight. One way to hold on to your creativity, your voice, and hone in on knowledge is to learn as much about business as possible. It is extremely necessary to build upon your knowledge and become acclimated with the idea of entertainment law, copyright, publishing, split sheets, Performing Rights Organizations, distribution streaming companies, settlements and any form of promotion deals. These are all things that will be beneficial to learn about in the long run. Stand on creativity and business!
Versatility
As you grow as an artist and you begin to take the world by storm, you will constantly have to work hard to keep your core audience and acquire new successes and listeners along the way. One way to continue to appeal to current listeners and newer ones, is by displaying your versatility. In an attempt to remain authentic this can be a challenge but there are a few ways to do so. These ways include observing other creatives, staying on top of ongoing trends, developing a secure action plan, finding new and authentic ways to elevate your band, and trying new things. Never be afraid to find new ways to expand your creative eye and sound. What are some ways that you can expand on and emphasize who you are as an artist? How can you be unique and stand out?
Authenticity
While versatility is important, it is vital to remember that versatility and authenticity can indeed coexist. Authenticity can be very difficult to hang on to in the entertainment industry. Surrounded by so many other creatives and trendsetters, it can be a struggle to remain authentic to your sound. You may find yourself feeling less relevant as numerous artists compete for relevance in a world of social media trends. Many creatives get caught up in pleasing others rather than remembering what made them realize they were made for the industry in the first place, which was being themselves. However, it is important to remember your goals, inspiration, and the legacy you'd like to leave behind as an artist. What message has always been your dream to sell through your music? As you continue to rise and emerge into the realm of extreme artistry, one thing that will grow you into an unforgettable creative is your ability to remain true to who you are.
Music
As cliche as it may sound this is the number one tool to staying steadfast in your field as a creative. While there are billions of people creating constantly and working to be artists, not many are actually sure what their craft entails. It can be easy to get lost in the consistency of releasing music, live shows, audience engagements, and interviews. As a result, many artists begin to neglect the importance of reinventing their sound and taking time to be inspired. Drawing from their experiences and their imagination is important to continue to be a force within the industry. Continue to pour into yourself as a musician, continue to learn more about music, and continue to explore the depth of your artistr..
Everything
I am sure that you have heard many times that you don't know everything or that there is no one on this earth that knows everything, which is absolutely true. However, it never hurts to attempt to be as efficient in multiple areas and skills as you can. While it is important to have a team, as emerging artists it can be hard to find those who truly value your creativity, therefore it may be hard to obtain a team early on. This is why it is beyond important to know how to hold yourself accountable and learn as many positions as you can whether it be graphic design, sound engineering, and even communication. Your listeners fall in love with who you are as a person aside from your music, and in order to be a better person you must learn and develop. Developing takes trial, error, and getting out of one's comfort zone. It is okay to know it all every once in a while.
That being said, being an emerging artist is far from simple. You have to fight for your authenticity, creativity, and even your voice. In order to continue to emerge into artistry and show your creativity as an artist, you must take these necessary steps to continue to grow and be a successful musician in this industry. Here's to growth and here's to you as an emerging artist, musician, creative, and individual!
Exploring the Influence of Travis Scott
Written By: Elainey Bass
When you hear the name Travis Scott, some may associate him with the Kardashian family or the controversial tragedy that happened at one of his concerts. But for many, the one thing that comes to mind is the psychedelic, futuristic feel of Travis Scott’s music. It’s captivating and almost freaky how he can flow easily on a beat that seems fitting for outer space. His voice and aesthetic is unique, distinct, and often imitated. Over the course of his career he has created catchy songs that are recognized around the world; all while staying authentic and never switching up his sound. Throughout his success, he has influenced many artists throughout our generation and continues to take the lead of this particular sound of Hip-Hop.
Travis Scott released his debut album Rodeo in 2015. But before the album, Travis was blessed with the opportunity to work as a producer for G.O.O.D Music, which was owned by Kanye West, in 2008. He became Kanye’s protege soon after working on his Yeezus and Magna Carter albums. Taking this time into account, one can easily say that Travis has been in the game for a while now. He has put out three solo albums since then, with his most recent being UTOPIA. Even with much success over the years, he has shown love to other artists with a similar sound. Playboi Carti, Destroy Lonely, and Ken Carson are just a few that have put their own twist on the psychedelic rap scene.
Fully emerging in 2017, Playboi Carti came out of nowhere for most. Although he was releasing mixtapes around 2011 and 2012, Carti really did not peek, or blow up, until the release of his self-titled debut album. The Atlanta rapper was known for his radical fashion sense and mysterious persona. However, many people labeled him as a mumble-rapper and didn't really take to him as much as Travis Scott, despite the similarity of the production and overall sound of their songs. However on his second album, Die Lit, Travis Scott was featured on the song “Love Hurts” and was a fan favorite on the album. Playboi Carti eventually went on a hiatus but has slowly been making his way back into the limelight. The two continued to collaborate on songs, with most of them being on Travis Scott’s projects. Their most recent collaboration, “FEIN”, on Travis Scott’s UTOPIA album still has people buzzing about what’s next for Playboi Carti.
Destroy Lonely and Ken Carson are two younger artists that have emerged onto the scene with similar fanbases. The influence of Travis Scott, and even a little Playboi Carti, is very evident in most of their work. Keeping this in mind, it seemed only fitting that the two join Playboi Carti on his most recent tour. Even though Travis Scott has yet to collaborate with either one of them, the influence is still very much evident in their songs and style.
There’s no denying that Travis Scott has created his own lane and leaves a sprinkle of his aesthetic on many of the artists that are popular in this generation. It’s also easy to say that Kanye West may have even had a hand in developing Travis’s sound and artistry. Nevertheless, Scott continues to show why he will continue to have longevity in the rap game. With a different sound, both vocally and production wise, he never leaves his listeners bored. They always want more and may even go a bit overboard in the process. His concerts are known to be one big party, which has posed safety threats on many occasions. Despite this, his fans still continue to show up and show out, resulting in neverending love and support for his music and artistry.
Rock & Hip-Hop: Lil Wayne’s Memorable Mashup
Written By: Elainey Bass
When formulating a list of iconic and memorable rappers in the industry, many people tend to have the same suggestions. Biggie, Tupac, Jay-Z, and maybe even Kanye West. However, you can’t forget to mention Dwanye Michael Carter Jr., professionally known as Lil Wayne. Between his crazy metaphors, unique voice, and humble spirit, his contributions to the rap game have been never ending. Mr. Carter has released over thirteen solo albums, but the Rebirth album is one that sticks out to many. Why? Despite mixed reviews, Wayne experimented, entered into the Rock genre, and created a lane of his own.
Released in 2010, Rebirth featured fourteen tracks on the deluxe version. It included features from artists like Nicki Minaj and Eminem. But what really gives his songs that classic Rock feel are his features from Kevin Rudolph (the first White Rock artist signed to Cash Money Records) and Pop-Rock singer Shanell. In the “Prom Queen" music video, Rock band KORN was featured despite not having a verse on the song. Throughout the album, you can hear familiar guitar chords, banging drums, and heavy bass under his vocals. However, some may feel like the instruments are a bit too much and overshadow Wayne’s lyricism.
It’s important to note that this particular sound did not start with Wayne. Back in the day, Run- D.M.C. experimented with the heavy sound of drums and crossed over to the Rock genre with their song “Walk This Way” featuring Aerosmith. The heavy drums and overall rock-feel is evident in a lot of their discography. Jay-Z and Linkin Park’s collaboration album in 2004, Collision Course, is also a great example. But despite these previous projects that received great feedback from fans and music critics alike, Wayne’s album slightly fell short.
During that time, the album debuted number two in the Billboard 200. But music critics on websites like Billboard, Pitchfork, and even Rolling Stone had mixed reviews about Wayne’s new venture. On Pitchfork.com, the reviewer described the album by saying, “Concocting the world's finest excrement-related rhymes, Rebirth is most definitely a flop, terribly unsexy, and contains surprisingly few shit jokes.” This is not the only review of its nature to be published. However, a few critics enjoyed it and described it as "Rebirth has moments of genius, and those moments almost always coincide with coupling fiery emotion with punk's propulsive rhythm.” Regardless of the reviews, Lil Wayne performed “Drop The World” with Eminem and drummer Travis Barker at the 2010 Grammy Awards and the crowd was thoroughly pleased.
Despite the critics dissecting the album and giving their own opinions, Wayne remains humble and confident in everything that he releases. His individuality seeps through in everything he does and is not ashamed to say that his inspiration is no one. He inspires himself and his five Grammys are a true testament to this. While Rebirth may not be a fan favorite for Wayne lovers, it still proves that the rapper simply does not need approval from anyone else but himself. After the album, he still proceeded to drop projects that exceeded fans expectations, all while keeping that same rockstar rapper vibe. Because of this, Lil Wayne has proved time and time again why he is considered a legend in the rap game.

Tiara Thomas

Lyrical Masterminds
Written By: Elainey Bass
Writing music is a gift that many don’t possess. Coming up with lyrics that touch the soul and challenge the way you think, all while combining it with beats and instruments, is a skill that professionals take pride in. That is why you often have numerous songwriters, or even ghostwriters, in the industry who may pick up where the artist may lack. There are many songwriters in the world that are the mastermind behind some of your favorite songs. Whether it be Hip-Hop, R&B, or even Pop, these songwriters listed below are some of the fiercest and most memorable in the game.
Coming up first, we have a Virginia-bred legend that is no stranger to the music industry. Missy Elliot has been making global waves since the late '90s. She most recently was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, making her the first female hip-hop artist to receive this honor. But before this accolade, Missy was also an artist herself and did not limit herself. Her songs like ‘Get Your Freak On’ and ‘Work It’ easily made her a household name. But what many don’t realize is that Missy has penned over 300 songs throughout her career. By working with artists like Aaliyah on “If Your Girl Only Knew” and “One In A Million,” “Need U Bad” by Jazmine Sullivan, and “Everything To Me” by Monica, she was easily putting many of the R&B girlies on the map just off her strong pen game. Missy Elliot deserves her flowers and much more.
Ester Dean is another talented songwriter who has made multiple contributions to artists in the industry. Some may recognize her from the film ‘Pitch Perfect’ or know her as the woman who wrote the song “Rude Boy” for Rihanna, which would become her first number one hit as a songwriter. But Ester has so much more under her belt. She has written songs across all genres as well as soundtracks for multiple films ('Trolls World Tour' and ‘Rio’). Pop artists like Selena Gomez (“Come & Get It”) and Katy Perry (“Firework”) have had the opportunity to work with the songwriter and saw tremendous results, reaching in the top ten on the Billboard charts. Aside from them, Ester also has worked with Beyoncé on “Countdown,” Nicki Minaj on “Super Bass,” and “Pills N Potions,” and Robin Thicke on “Sex Therapy.” Ester is very multi-faceted, and it is safe to say that she has her hand involved in many things.
This last name may be someone that many are unfamiliar with. Diana Gordon is a songwriter from Queens, New York. When she started out in 2005, she went under the alias name Wynter Gordon. Under this name, she penned "Gonna Breakthrough” by Mary J. Blige (Diana’s first professional writing credit) at only nineteen years old. As years went on she continued writing under that name, but a call from a global superstar would give her the confidence to change it to her real name. Beyoncé gave her the opportunity to write three songs on her ‘Lemonade’ album, with one of them being the mega-hit “Sorry.” Diana has also released music of her own and continues to make her own waves throughout the industry.
Besides these three, there are many other songwriters that have written many of the hits that you love. While it may be a rare occasion that the artist wrote and performed the song, these three women mentioned above do it all. Their passion is their purpose, and it shines through in all of their work.
Behind the Hits: Songwriters Turned Solo Artists
Now more than ever, we are seeing songwriters display their talents more openly, and some have even decided to take on a solo career of their own. While there are many songwriters all over the world that have decided to choose this path, there are a few that currently have audiences wanting to hear more of their talent.

Music is always evolving. As time goes on, the music industry has become more vocal about who has been writing the songs we seem to love so much. Back in the day, we used to see artists keep their songwriters in the shadows, and nobody would know until the writer is thanked at an awards ceremony. But now more than ever, we are seeing songwriters display their talents more openly, and some have even decided to take on a solo career of their own. While there are many songwriters all over the world that have decided to choose this path, there are a few that currently have audiences wanting to hear more of their talent.
Leon Thomas III has been heavily involved in the music industry for quite some time as a songwriter and producer. Some of the newer generation may recognize him from the hit show Victorious that previously aired on Nickelodeon. However, what many don’t know is that Thomas co-wrote various songs for the show. Over the years, Thomas explored the idea of becoming a solo artist by releasing mixtapes in 2013 and 2016. Throughout this time, he was still in his writing bag with artists like Kehlani, Toni Braxton & Babyface, and Ariana Grande. But, it wasn't until 2021 when listeners started to pay more attention and tap into his work. Leon Thomas III gained social media notoriety for his writing credits for three songs on Drake’s Certified Lover Boy album (“Pipe Down”, “Love All”, & “In the Bible”). He also has a production credit for SZA’s hit song “Snooze.” Since then, he released his Electric Dusk album last year and headlined his first tour that kicked off this past November.
Muni Long had the R&B world in a chokehold with her love song “Hrs & Hrs.” But what many don’t know is that she started out as a songwriter and even provided background vocals for many artists that we know and love. With her experience being in a girl group back in 2008, it made sense for Muni to continue to utilize her talents. She hit the ground running in 2010 by co-writing Rihanna’s “California King Bed” on her album, Loud, and Chris Brown’s “Beg For It” from his album, F.A.M.E.. As years followed, Muni Long lent her pen to artists like Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, and Ariana Grande. However, you simply can’t put Muni in just one genre. She has also worked with the pop girl group Fifth Harmony, country group Florida Georgia Line, and Latin superstar Pitbull. In 2017, the superstar won her first Grammy (Best Solo Pop Performance) for lending her songwriting skills and vocals to Kelly Clarkson’s “Love So Soft.” Simply put, there is nothing that Muni Long can’t do!
A few months ago, Victoria Monét had everyone throwing on early 2000s gear and dancing to her song “On My Mama.” She has also closed out 2023 by receiving seven Grammy nominations this year for her recent album Jaguar II. But the thing is, Miss Monét is no stranger to this industry at all. She started out writing for acclaimed artists as early as 2010. “I Hate That You Love Me” by Diddy Dirty Money has her pen written all over it. Artists like Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Selena Gomez, and Fifth Harmony all credit her for her songwriting skills. But her most frequent collaboration is with Ariana Grande. Victoria Monét has writing credits on every single album of Grande’s. So, it was only fitting that her first two Grammy nominations as a songwriter would be for Album of the Year (thank u, next) and Record of the Year (“7 rings”) back in 2020. She continues to stay consistent throughout her musical journey and is definitely considered a force to be reckoned with.
These are only three out of millions of songwriters around the world that have decided to take this journey. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, the work these people create has been a key component to the success of many artists that we know and love. Take the time to appreciate everyone involved in the process, not just the ones who sing the words and accept the award on the big stage.
How Tech is Creating New Revenue Streams for Artists
Streaming platforms are a strong example of how artists have a lower barrier of entry into music and can diversify their profits. Starting in 2021, Spotify opened its market to create revenue streams for artists' merch and shows.

It's 2023, and as technology continues to evolve, musical artists are evolving too. Through various social platforms and tools that facilitate promotion, artists can now excel in multiple ventures. Clothing brands, books, restaurants, podcasts and cosmetic lines are just a few examples of the greatness artists can achieve using technology. Multiple streams of income are something many people have begun to explore, so let's take a deeper dive into how your favorite artists are doing it.
Streams entered the musical realm in 2005, changing the narrative of music forever. What used to be a time when artists had to go above and beyond to sell their mixtapes and CDs is now an era where artists can receive credit for their music and more through apps and other forms of technology. Streaming platforms are a strong example of how artists have a lower barrier of entry into music and can diversify their profits. Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and others have built platforms where artists' voices can be heard from anywhere. However, artists probably never realized what the future of these apps had in store for them.
Starting in 2021, Spotify opened its market to create revenue streams for artists' merch and shows. For example, the prominent streaming platform has a section below an artist's music where you can find their merchandise as well as their next show date near you. If the artist has a show happening in your city, the app will provide the precise link for you to purchase a ticket directly. This has allowed many musicians' ticket sales to skyrocket, as you don’t have to look up tour dates for your favorite artist anymore. Spotify will send a direct notification to your cell phone stating that your most-listened-to artist is having a show near you very soon!
Since this amazing update, other platforms have branched out to do the same thing. Amazon Music is a streaming company that also allows fans to make certain purchases while listening to an artist.
Furthermore, artists are creating their very own lanes and streams of income by starting their own labels, creating content specific to their audience and becoming shareholders or owners of streaming platforms. For instance, one of the biggest-selling artists in Hip-hop, Jay Z, founded one of the biggest streaming companies, Tidal. This shows that in the last few years, many musicians have been able to acquire success by building new revenue streams using technology.
Another way artists use technology is through partnerships and collaborations with brands. Clothing companies develop successful partnerships to promote clothing and the artist's brand as well. Examples of this are Fashion Nova collaborations with creatives like Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, and more. Other brands such as Adidas, Reebok, and Tiffany & Co., are also known for their brand partnerships with artists. These collaborations are huge for artists as they generate revenue streams and allow artists to receive much more media attention. Due to brand deals, artists' music can receive the recognition it deserves.
As an artist, what ways do you plan to take over the world and create more streams of revenue for yourself?

As artists continue to grow and release music, the need for digital service providers will continue to increase. Distribution companies such as DistroKid, United Masters, Tunecore, CD Baby, and many others are known for their ability to place artists' music onto streaming services. Now, there is a new company on the block! The new company planning to take over the music distribution business is Beatroot. Beatroot is a digital distribution company under Made in Memphis Entertainment, a music label based in Memphis, Tennessee.
Made in Memphis Entertainment was founded in 2015 by Hall of Fame and award-winning songwriter, David Porter, and co-founded by President Tony Alexander. The two of them set out to start a label and several companies under this label with hopes of showing talents from their city that they don’t have to leave town to get their big break. Through companies like Heavy Hitters for sync licensing, MIME publishing company, and Beatroot, they can now share this story and elevate the careers of artists from across the country. They also own two studio locations by the name of 4U Studios, which are located in their hometown as well as the prominent music city of Atlanta, Georgia. The studio has been a backbone for creatives such as Hitkidd, Moneybagg Yo, Erica Banks, Zaytoven, and more. It is even credited for the making of the hit record, F.N.F, by hip hop star, Gorilla.
With all of these accolades under its belt, one of Made in Memphis Entertainment’s most successful companies is Beatroot. Beatroot has supported several notable artists including Love & HipHop’s Lyrica Anderson, award-winning singer-songwriter Elijah Blake, gospel sensation Wess Morgan, and Dougie Fresh.
A discography of successful artists like these is why Beatroot’s Client service representative, Real, explains this company is not only good for artists well on their way but also those who are just starting. Real obtained his position during a Heavy Hitters and Beatroot writing camp partnership a few years back. During his time working with Beatroot, he has been able to touch the careers of many artists and provide them with the tools they need to break into the industry and create timeless music.
Before entering into a deal with Beatroot, Real says artists are scouted by A&RS or even referred by other music executives. Client representatives like Real spend a significant amount of time keeping an eye on the next big artist. The company is always on the search for emerging talent. More importantly, they even provide feedback for artists and their music even if they decide not to move forward with the partnership. This is only a small portion of the great things Beatroot offers. Many distributors often tend to take a large percentage from artists for distribution, but Beatroot believes in the 80/20 rule. The company only receives 20% of what the artists earn from their music, while artists earn 80% reward for their hard work.
“We pride ourselves on being educators of artists and teaching them industry-standard practices, how to develop roll-out plans, and ultimately the best practices for releasing music,” Real stated during his interview.
Another thing that separates Beatroot from other distribution platforms is its ability to be personable and provide unlimited assistance to its artists at all times. That’s right! Clients who partner with the company receive very hands-on assistance when it comes to getting their music out on streaming platforms. “Every artist that signs on board with us gets a designated client service representative. Clients have our direct phone number. If they happen to need changes with their music they have the ability to shoot me a text.” This method may sound amazing to plenty of artists, being that other DSP’s require artists to reach out to a general email and wait 24 to 48 hours for a response.
Furthermore, clients also receive benefits such as playlist pitching and having their music presented to Heavy Hitters, to be considered for sync licensing for television shows and movies. Though Beatroot doesn’t guarantee such placements they still put forth the effort to give artists the best experience possible.
Beatroot continues to be a driving force in the digital world of music, and we are excited to see what artists come from its efforts.
The Use of Social Media as a Marketing Strategy for Emerging Artists

The hardest thing about being an upcoming artist is getting your foot in the door. All it takes is that one song to gain attention from the public eye, but maintaining that attention is the tricky part. The use of social media platforms has become a must when it comes to artists promoting their music. But how do artists use these platforms effectively? Digital marketing strategies on YouTube, TikTok, and On The Radar Radio come into play, and artists are utilizing these platforms now more than ever to keep their name buzzing in the industry.
In the early 2000s, YouTube was the go-to platform where artists would post covers of other songs and even their original pieces. Artists like Justin Bieber and The Weeknd garnered most of their attention by posting consistently. Even as time goes on, artists of all genres still use YouTube to publish their music videos for hit songs or other exclusive songs that may not be on other music streaming platforms (Apple Music, Spotify, etc.). YouTube also gives people the opportunity to monetize their content and even offers YouTube Analytics, which tells you details about where the fans are located, their demographic, and how often they watch the content that’s published. These extra perks help the artist figure out their target audience, all while making money in the process. YouTube is still used and popular today, but lately, Gen Z has found another platform to take over: TikTok.
Everyone loves TikTok. We all find ourselves scrolling through the app for a good laugh, a new recipe to make for dinner, or another exercise to add to your gym routine. But like YouTube, this platform has launched careers across all genres. The “For You” page on TikTok is simply that; videos that are curated just for you based on the content that you like and the accounts that you follow. By keeping this in mind, artists will post their songs on the app and create some sort of dance challenge or trend in hopes that it’ll gain more traction. The more people that engage with the sound that’s attached to the video, it’s more likely that the sound will pop up on your “For You” page. One of the most famous success stories of the app has been Lil Nas X. His first hit song “Old Town Road,” which he would later go on to win two Grammy awards for, had the entire TikTok community posting videos of themselves dancing to the song. His song quickly rose to the top of the Billboard charts, and the rest is history. Newcomers like Lay Bankz, PinkPantheress, and even Doechii have TikTok to thank for the rise in the number of streams for their songs.
On The Radar Radio was founded and hosted by Gabe P., a journalist from Long Island. The idea of On The Radar Radio unfolded in 2018 and became a go-to platform for upcoming artists in the New York area. When COVID hit, Gabe still conducted virtual interviews with artists. Once the pandemic died down, he expanded on his radio show and created On The Radar Freestyles. This allowed New York artists to perform a freestyle live, which would eventually get posted on On The Radar’s platforms. As the popularity increased, Gabe started to garner the attention of artists outside of New York as well as artists who were already established in the industry. This gave his platform even more traction and even resulted in Drake coming on the show to do a freestyle with UK rapper, Central Cee. Gabe’s platform ended up landing him a permanent spot on Power 105.1 radio station, and many artists today are still looking to catch their big break by coming on the show to do a freestyle.
Overall, it is safe to say that social media plays a big role in the success of budding artists. Consistent posting can be more beneficial than harmful, especially in a generation that fully relies on the internet for everything.
Next Wave: Sonny Digital

Sonny Digital, the multi-platinum producer who has generated billions of streams across bangers for Drake, Future, Lil Uzi Vert, Beyoncé, Don Toliver and 2 Chainz, is now signed to Generation Now with the likes of Lil Uzi and Jack Harlow, as an artist. The Michigan-born and Atlanta-based creator, who has shaped the culture with a series of smashes and at the same time earned widespread acclaim on a series of his own mixtapes and singles from The FADER, XXL and more, is turning the spotlight on every facet of himself.
Sonny Digital is showing the world his evolving musicality and who he is today. “In 2023, I’m still a producer, but I’ve always been an artist,” he states. “Overall, I’m just a creative person when it comes to anything musical. Sonny Digital is the producer, and Sonny is the artist. It’s no different from when I first started until today. Now, I just have a platform to show everyone the other side of my artistry.”
Along the way of producing records for others, he assembled what would become his debut album, Delores [Generation Now/Atlantic Records]. Referencing those family ties in the title, it brings everything full circle as he leaps forward sonically. “Dolores is my mom, and I’m just saying, I’m her son. She and my dad encouraged my music. We just never knew how far it would take me. With everything I’m speaking on in this project, the title just makes sense without me having to say too much.”
It practically felt predestined for him to do so. Originally from Nigeria, his dad harbored a passion for music—which Sonny naturally absorbed. At the same time, their heritage inspired him. “My father instilled the importance of making sure your family and the people around you are taken care of,” he notes. “It plays a big role in who I am.” Throughout his childhood, he embraced a diehard work ethic. His brother passed down a dusty MPC, and Sonny spent countless hours on it before perfecting his craft on Fruity Loops. Simultaneously, he honed his abilities by rapping over his own tracks with friends. “I was just giving out beats back then,” he laughs. Breaking into the business, he crafted six cuts for Gorilla Zoe’s King Kong in 2011 at barely 20 years old. However, his beat for YC’s “Racks” [feat. Future] changed everything. It eventually reached gold status, and UPROXX retrospectively noted, “the song that began Future’s rise to being one of hip-hop’s biggest stars only cost $300.”
As always, he lets the music do the talking. The first single “Wakenbake” [feat. Juicy J] instantly intoxicates with its hazy chant, “Wake up, get my blunts rolled.” Through plumes of smoke, he and Juicy J trade blazed-up bars as the beat unravels in an unpredictable rhythm. “I tried to challenge myself to rap over a more intricate beat,” he notes. “Juicy J has been my homie since day one. I wanted to show him love the same way he shows me love.” On “Gotta Slide,” a soulful string sample gives way to a glitchy bounce as he admits, “If my brother died, I swear to God I gotta slide.” The record is poetically raw and personal in nature. “I was rapping about the moment my boy PnB Rock had just died and it was capturing the feeling. I wanted to pay tribute to him with something good.”
With boundlessly creative beats, cinematic storytelling and lots of personal flair, Sonny is about to set the whole game on fire. “I’m trying to give you every side of who I am,” he leaves off. “Some days, I feel like rapping. Other days, I want to make beats or write songs for other people. I’m comfortable doing anything. That’s who I am.”
