Read more about his inspirations, building a name for himself and unifying as a multi-hyphenate creator.
“It’s music to get you moving,” Jean-Luc says about his sound as a fusion of influences from the ‘90s dance music and mid-2010s SoundCloud rap era.
The NYC based artist nods to icons like Daft Punk, The Outhere Brothers, and Playboi Carti. We were first introduced to this pop star nearly a decade ago. His full-length 2019 project American Fantasy was in constant rotation with stand-out tracks like, “What I Want” and “On Time” featuring Rob Olu and Lil Evo.
Lately, he’s been releasing stand-alone singles like “Designer Coat,” “New Baby,” and “Kiss.” We are impressed by how Jean-Luc continues to expand his pop sound and embrace the wonderful evolution of music.
Raised on the internet, Jean-Luc used trial and error to build his brand, a journey that’s come with its share of experimentation.
“I think for a while I was trying to be ‘cool’ on the internet,” Jean-Luc tells us. “It was when I started having fun with it that I saw people really enjoy what I was doing.”
That approach has surely paid off as Jean-Luc’s online presence combines humor, music, and style, bridging a connection with fans across the globe and securing collaborations with brands like Converse and Urban Outfitters.
“My favorite so far was probably the one I did for Urban Outfitters,” Jean-Luc shared of building organic brand partnerships. “I found them in middle school and was like an unpaid ambassador putting everyone on. Very full circle moment.”
Jean-Luc’s world isn’t just digital. He’s also embedded in NYC’s vibrant downtown scene, where his love for nightlife, street style, and performance merges. His aesthetic is rooted in ‘90s and 2000s fashion and inspired by icons like Tom Ford’s Gucci era and the “sexy” visuals of Calvin Klein and Dolce & Gabbana.
“I think I’m just focused on creating the things I’ve always wanted,” he says, adding that connecting online and offline with like-minded creatives is central to his ethos. “Creating can be isolating, so it’s crucial to be around people that get your hustle.”
Jean-Luc talks about how music has always been his “first love” but acting is another passion for him. He credits how going to acting school nurtured that desire and eventually led him to building this “clout guy” persona online.
“I went to acting school for a couple years and had an idea for a show and character that I started to tease online,” he adds. “It’s snow balled and luckily brought me this platform that allows me to create for a living which is fun.”
He hopes to expand even more next year so that his focus is 60 percent music and 40 percent skits.
This month’s Next Wave theme is “unity,” which means to come together for a common purpose or action. Jean-Luc shared how significant it’s been to build community as an artist, and how he utilizes his worlds online and in real life.
“The internet has been an amazing place to meet people,” Jean-Luc shared. “I also go out a lot and love seeing the same people IRL [in real life]. The downtown scene feels a bit high school which makes things fun.”

Next Wave: Jordan W. Carter
Written By: Sammy Approved | @opn.5ea
Jordan W. Carter is a multifaceted artist hailing from Southwest Atlanta, blending southern rap with jazz and gospel influences to create music that’s flamboyant, savory and introspective. Whether he's dropping viral bars, nurturing Black youth through the arts, or DJing, Carter’s curiosity and versatility are what set him apart in the game. Read more about how Jordan’s forging a path for his art by being himself, practicing self-awareness and soaking it all up like a sponge.
Jordan describes his sound as a mix of “southern rap, jazz, and gospel,” with an emphasis on storytelling that reveals the essence of who he is. Through tracks like those on his latest album, Head of the Flavor Team, listeners can hear his signature wordplay layered over jazz-inspired production. This unique sound reflects Jordan’s diverse music background and love for both the streets of Atlanta and his time studying concert percussion at Boston University.
“I am greatly influenced by T.I., Young Thug, Outkast, Bankroll Fresh, Migos, Young Dro (all the Atlanta legends),” Carter shared the artists who have inspired him. “And classical music as my undergraduate degree was in concert percussion at Boston University. I also have loved jazz since playing the vibraphone in my middle school jazz band and even have a vibraphone in my apartment. ”
Our introduction to Jordan’s musicianship started in the band room at Benjamin Elijah Mays High School in Southwest Atlanta. As a group of extremely well-rounded musicians, there are only a handful that continued in the arts beyond that legendary hallway. Jordan W. Carter was one of the creative students, who decided to take that risk.
“From my yellow glasses to chihuahua fatherhood, I show people who I am, what I represent, and those who identify, identify,” Jordan confidently reflected on who he is. “Those who don’t, don’t.”
Carter’s personality shines not just in his music, but also in the community he’s building. He compares his circle of supporters to “art-school Gryffindors,” a humble crew that values friendship, creativity, and excellence while embracing their individuality.
“I don’t rock with J.K. Rowling because of her anti-LGBTQ vibes,” he’s sure to add, highlighting his commitment to inclusivity and self-expression. Even with his vibrant artistry, Carter admits to struggles with self-doubt and the realities of navigating the music industry.
“Honestly, it is a journey. Sometimes I hate my art and don’t take any pride in it,” Jordan shares candidly. “I’m just out here trying my best and whoever rocks with that will be here to stay. ”
Yet, he continues to push forward, realizing the great responsibility he has as a human being and an artist. As a music educator and community builder, Jordan continues to have fun, dance, make music, and nurture black children through performing arts.
Carter more recently learned to produce his own music, which has allowed him to take control of his creative process. The Atlanta artist shared how learning to make his own beats has been a transformative milestone in his career so far.
“My lyrical ability combined with my new production skills make me feel extremely powerful,” he says. “I have one song that I produced out now called ‘Space’ and it feels like one of the best songs I’ve ever made. My voice over my own instrumentals just sound perfect together and I am putting out an album that I completely produced.”
Carter’s evolution has been a joy to witness as he continues to show up authentically as himself in music and online. He credits his personal development to the challenges he has overcome from unemployment to betrayal to illness.
“These tribulations are reflected in my music,” Carter shared. “Also, my curiosity in other sounds has certainly helped me to evolve.”
Jordan also mentions his experience living in New York City the past few years has been essential to his growth. Though he admits that as a businessman, he has more work to do.
“I feel like I am terrible [at business] which brings me a lot of insecurity at times,” Carter vulnerably shared. “I just want everything to be free and I am not even going to get into all my failed business endeavors, but just know, I have a lot of room to grow in this department.”
This month’s theme is Pride, and Jordan’s vulnerability, authenticity and musicianship is something to be proud of. Pride is considered a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements or from qualities that are widely admired.
While Jordan might have his own bouts with doubt, his tribe continues to root him on, recognizing his innate ability to create vibrant, catchy sounds with a real message. Carter shares the ways in which he takes pride in himself and his art.
“Taking pride right now could mean showing up for myself in large and small ways. From making my bed each morning to practicing my lyrics before a show,” Jordan shared. “Life isn’t going to hand over wins easily everyday so it's important to make your own victories. Ifeel like doing that is kind of propelling your career because you’re defining what success is and putting your best foot forward to achieve that.”
It’s quite obvious what Jordan’s personal superpower is and that is his selflessness and self-awareness. Though he believes his self-awareness is also his “biggest enemy.”
“Because I can easily beat myself up because I ALWAYS know better,” Carter adds. “I know myself, therefore, I always know what is best for me. And when I don't do what’s best when I KNEW better, I definitely slap myself on the wrist in some unhealthy ways.”
Fans may see Jordan as the Head of the Flavor team, a Crazyman???, or the Kendrick of theSouth, but he’s courageously making room for all his gifts and passions.
“Sometimes I want to DJ. Sometimes I want to run a dance company. Sometimes I want to rap. Sometimes I want to compose quartets with obscure instrumentation. Sometimes I want to write comedy,” Carter revealed. “I do have a very colorful background that allows me to speak to a wide array of experiences, but I really am still figuring things out.”
While he’s figuring it out, he has found his personal formula to success in learning from other artists. As a music savant and student of the game, he is thoughtful of different sounds, patterns and performances to continue learning from and incorporating in his own sound.
“My formula is being a sponge,” he adds.
Jordan shares helpful advice to aspiring artists saying, “Become fearless. You have to be ready for positive and negative feedback from every which way, online and in-person. Keep close friends around to support your progress and set expectations for growth because you may easily forget why you started making music without getting this type of support from others. ”
As for the future, Jordan W. Carter is still working on it, and that’s part of his charm. Whether that’s becoming a meme or hearing artists cite him as an influence, Carter is excited for what’s to come.
Be sure to connect and support Jordan W. Carter here as he explores art one day at a time.
Next Wave: Anna Field
Written By: Sammy Approved | @opn.5ea
This month’s next wave artist is doing things her own way and inspiring other little Black girls to be encouraged to sing across genres. Anna Field is an ethereal artist with an unforgettable voice, making waves with the ambition and vulnerability she expresses in her music. Read more about her influences, how she takes pride in her sound and her journey, and her commitment to authentic and bold expression.
Field describes her sound as “experimental,” blending dance, jazz, pop, and folk with an emphasis on storytelling and affirmation.
“I just try to stay true to myself,” she says.
Drawing inspiration from artists like Feist, Marvin Gaye, Donna Summer, Daft Punk, and Radiohead, Field finds empowerment in pushing musical boundaries and rejecting conventional song structures.
Growing up as a self-described “daughter of the internet,” Anna used social media to make connections, starting out by singing background vocals for local Atlanta artists. Her father
played a pivotal role, encouraging her to get vocal coaching and perform at open mic nights.
“My dad pushed me to go out and get a vocal coach and start doing open mic nights, which
I used as artist development,” Field reflects on her early experiences. “I did some acting and commercial modeling to get comfortable in front of cameras. And I feel like that was my college.”
Since then, she’s embraced artistic growth by taking advice, working with diverse writers, and pushing herself out of her comfort zone. Her latest project is appropriately titled, Medicine, as her voice literally soothes the soul.
Anna’s artistic journey hasn’t been easy, but she has found it quite rewarding. Field recounts attending the Grammys in 2019 after participating in a music competition sponsored by Lincoln, a moment that validated her dreams of performing on big stages.
“It’s possible to make money off of what you love, and it’s possible to thrive in it,” she says.
October’s theme is “pride.” This can be defined as consciousness of one's own dignity or to be especially proud of a particular quality or skill. Anna has been able to take pride in her art while building community through her authenticity to the craft and herself.
As a Black queer alternative artist, Anna is also challenging stereotypes and bending genres. She continues to explore a sound that is seemingly unconventional for Black artists.
“For a long time, people assumed I was an R&B singer when I told them I’m an artist,” she explains.
Now, she’s carving out space in genres where she’s not the norm, offering representation for future generations. Anna is committed to bold, authentic expression with captivating visuals to accompany her one-of-a-kind voice.
“There’s freedom in doing whatever I want whenever I want to do it,” she says, excited for the collaborations and creative freedom the future holds.
For artists looking to forge their own path, Anna’s advice is simple: “Take chances, invest in yourself, and don’t overthink it.”

Our Next Wave artist Mauzy Music is embarking on a journey through his love for music, community and connection. The Atlanta raised artist creates feel-good tunes that provoke thought and self-love. Read more about how he is making waves in music and beyond.
As an artist, lover and a leader, Mauzy knows he is destined to lead people to self-love through his art. His style is multi-dimensional with elements of sounds that make the soul feel lovely and thought-provoking lyricism that makes you hit rewind.
“Most of the people that resonate with the music are open minded individuals,” Mauzy told us of fans who naturally gravitate to his music.
Mauzy’s latest album Free Game is literally that – FREE GAME. A compilation of 11 records and freestyles that offer advice on how to live well and simply keep going. Some of our favorite tracks include, “Better” featuring Sauce Papi, “Freedom” and “Protecting My Mental” featuring Zi Starchild. Mauzy has a way of telling stories about real life experiences through his music that also encourage and uplift his supporters.
Though Mauzy is known for rap music, his art is diverse and boasts several genres. Songwriting has allowed him to make genre-bending music, which forces people to see him outside of a Hip-Hop box. One of his major influences is Bob Marley, and that fact is greatly reflected in the music.
“How he was able to bring people together in the spirit of love,” Mauzy talks about Marley’s impact on his craft. “I aim to have my music have that same effect.”
With a background in music business and marketing, Mauzy has skillfully worked to create a name and brand for himself through getting to know himself, highlighting things that set him apart from the rest and featuring the things that others can relate to.
My introduction to Mauzy Music was at Patchwerk Recording Studios in Atlanta, Gerogia, where he won an impressive “Tight 32” contest, which allowed him to record and perform at the studio’s showcase. Since then, he’s sharpened his pen and evolved as an artist and businessman. He believes his personal evolution came out of “necessity.”
“[As an] independent artist, I’ve had to do for self in many ways,” Mauzy shared. “Recording myself, marketing myself, setting up my own tours, I’ve had to learn everything it is that’s necessary to grow.”
Mauzy’s personal superpower is the power of the tongue. As an artist who recognizes how powerful words can be, he acknowledges his unique gift as a rapper and a songwriter could ultimately manifest his reality.
The Atlanta based artist was first introduced to the power of music through a friend. Mauzy began sharing his gifts in a group.
“I was inspired by a friend and we started growing together,” he revealed. “Being a solo artist definitely changed my art to give it a more personal touch.”
Since then, Mauzy has accomplished a great deal as a solo act. He told us that one of his greatest accomplishments so far was putting on two country wide tours independently.
“Just me and my friends sending emails and connecting all the dots we could,” he adds. “Performing in Los Angeles, Nashville, New York, Atlanta, Memphis and more.”
This month’s theme is “embark,” and it means to begin a course of action, especially one that is important or demanding. Music and storytelling is not an easy feat for any artist looking to breakthrough. Mauzy realizes that to become or purely be an artist, you must start.
“Starting requires fearlessness,” Mauzy adds. “Starting requires you to have a purpose. I advise any one to start with love. Do one thing because you love it not because of material gain.”
Mauzy’s goal as an independent artist, embarking on his distinctive path requires him to create his own waves. He hopes to separate himself as an artist and songwriter by establishing individuality and uniqueness in his music. While also allowing his fanbase to find something relatable in his craft.
“I try to pave that road for myself with every release, giving people music that they’ve never heard before,” he told us. “Timeless music that outlasts any trend.”
His ideas naturally flow to him through words, melodies or visuals. Lately, Mauzy’s path has pushed him towards embarking upon sync placements in TV and film.
“I think my music is meant to help convey a message or emotion that you get best through film,” Mauzy shared of his next steps.
Mauzy music looks forward to becoming a bigger force in music and beyond by continuing to connect with his community and welcoming others on the journey. He notes that with building the movement he’s excited to find his people.
For aspiring artists on their own journey to success, Mauzy offers more free game: “I’d advise other artists to study what it is that they love about music, figure out what it is that you have to offer, and then go forward. Full speed.”
Be sure to connect and support Mauzy Music as he embarks on his path to global superstardom here.

I personally met this Queen many moons ago, performing around the city of Atlanta, constantly supporting artists carving out their own lanes and being a light amongst an often dark industry. Since then, her community has watched the continuous growth as she jet sets across the globe with her gifts.

Nycee recently debuted her latest project Nutritional Facts, which is a Pop album boasting nine songs. Her singles “Trauma” and “Refreshed” have gained momentum on streaming, and it’s the first project she’s released since her project M.I.M.O.S.A in 2021.

It was at the age of 17 when she got her first shot at an open mic to perform on Atlanta’s heritage radio station, V103. The rapper performed a battle live on air, and itw as the first time the world was able to experience her artistry for 9 weeks straight.
Nesha’s influences range from OutKast, The Dungeon Family, Queen Latifah, Eve, Nicki Minaj, Nipsey Hussle, Missy Elliott, Whitney Houston and so many more.
“Their fearless, bold messages and style is what permeates most for me and it has always inspired me,” she adds of her inspirations.

“Getting the opportunity to interview and freestyle on Sway in the Morning is a childhood dream of mine that came true,” Nesha reminisces on her major career milestones so far. “Super blessed and still in disbelief.”
She also credits working with producers Zaytoven and Tasha Catour significant wins throughout her journey. Nycee landed a placements on popular TV series “Euphoria” and “P-Valley,” which she also notes as career highlights so far. There are so many impactful times throughout her career like getting her music video on BET and MTV and touring international to 7 countires.
“God is amazing,” she adds. “It just honestly makes me want to go harder to top those last accomplishments. ‘if I did that, I know I can do this’ type of attitude.”
The key for Nesha to continue topping her last win is self-mastery. She believes that in order to embark on her personal path to success, she must first hone in on each gift God has bestowed upon her.
“This is a season to really tap in to take it to a level I never imagined,” Nesha declares. “I see so many things for my myself and my brand. I will travel this entire globe impacting every soul I meet.”
And, so it shall be. Nesha offers a refreshing take on music, and she believes that it’s what the game has been missing for so long. She doesn’t use profanity in her music and fans can still enjoy her songs while turning up at the club.
Nesha’s formula to success is to keep going, keep God first and continue betting on herself. Yet, the most important key to her future is, “remaining humble.”
She’s most excited to cement her legacy, more major endeavors, continuous personal growth and building her audience around the world. As for those looking to create their own wave, Nesha’s advice is simple, “Keep God first.”
“You have to find out what your wave is what that means to you,” Nycee adds. “Because chasing after someone else’s wave you may drown. You have to learn as much information about this business as you can. You have to remain a student in this game and don’t take no for an answer. Make a way when there is none.”

Next Wave: Kiya Lacey
Written By: Sammy Approved | @thecnsamuel
Singer, songwriter, DJ and entrepreneur Kiya Lacey is a force to be reckoned with. Her tenacity as an artist and businesswoman pushes her beyond the pulse of music into her own stratosphere.
The alt-R&B singer has always kept her sound and look inventive. Kiya Lacey is a unique talent with several gifts, who has finally stepped into each one of her talents seamlessly. As a singer, songwriter, curator, DJ and business owner, Kiya reveals that faith and community has allowed her to evolve.
“I got to give it to God first,” Lacey shared. “I really have been guided to build strong support and community both online and IRL [in real life]! I study a lot, and I take a lot of risks. I am so thankful for an audience that learns and grows with me.”
The Nashville bred talent first started putting out her own music in middle school. She performed at local shows throughout the birthplace of country music. While Kiya birthed a community for Rodeo way before Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, the trendsetter can hop out the saddle and straight into any genre she pleases.
“I honestly feel like the most common genre I’m put in is Alt-r&b,” Kiya said of how fans classify her sound. “People have said ‘haunted strip club music’ which I honestly think is so hot!”
Kiya’s fans are accustomed to everything when it comes to consuming her music. If you’re new here, don’t try to put the singer in a box.
“I am building a community of open minded ‘alternative’ listeners. I experiment with all genres truly,” she adds.
In terms of influences, Lacey has several who have influenced her sound, style and approach to creation.
“Grace Jones, style glamour ICON,” she lists off her inspirations. “Bjork, vocal arrangements, costumes, and she also is a fye DJ! Erykah Badu, the queen come on NOW the songwriting, style, and SHE also DJs, Celia Cruz, Missy Elliot, Beyonce, Rihanna, Pharrell Williams, James Blake, FKA Twigs, Travis Scott… I could go on and on.”
Lacey weaves all of these artists into one common theme, which is “the ability to be a undeniable force. All multifaceted, no boundaries!” Just like her.
The moment that cemented Kiya as a powerhouse early on was when she won a competition that allowed her to open for legendary R&B singer and actress Brandy.
“I won a competition to open for Brandy and that really started the buzz,” Lacey continued. “I became the first woman on Nashville’s Red Bull Sound Select in 2015. Then was a finalist for the first Afropunk battle of the bands Atlanta like 2016? I believe!? That motivated me to move here [Atlanta]!”
Other significant career highlights for Kiya include, her impressive “The 6” EP rollout with sponsorship from Red Bull, touring with several female musicians as a DJ, working with one of her inspirations, FKA Twigs, for we are the womxn project at Blue Flame strip club in Atlanta, casting Rico Nasty’s “STFU” video, getting her business Fruta Mami booked for an upcoming showcase at Urban Outfitters called “Discover Puerto Rico,” and putting on her own headlining show at Aisle 5.
These are just a few highlights that have inspired her to keep moving forward. Lacey wears a number of hats, and each moment encourages her to remember she’s moving in the right direction.
This month’s “Next Wave” theme is Power. Everyone has a unique gift and personal superpower. Kiya reveals that hers is tenacity. After moving from one music capital to the next, several career pivots and personal woes, the Atlanta based multi-talented artist has the willpower to keep it rolling.
“I am so determined to bring my ideas to life. That truly is a gift I hold dear to my heart,” Kiya shared of her unique gift.
Kiya is one of the most unconventional talents in music today. She has always prided herself on carving out her own space in an industry of mainstream hits.
“I really have always wanted to be in my own lane and do what’s best for my heart,” Lacey shared. “I really look at music as a self-expression and I don’t approach it in a ‘let’s get a radio hit.’ I really just want to share how I feel and experiment with sounds!”
As tenacious as Kiya is, she is not afraid to take a breather from her craft. She has since poured her creativity into other artforms like DJ’ing.
“I recently started DJing both in support of women, who need tour support and independently,” Lacey shared of how she takes time away from her personal music. “That artistic expression allowed me to fall back in love with music and STUDY. I also get to test out new records in social settings live on stage.”
While Kiya understands the importance of making a name for herself, crafting her own sound and brand identity, she also believes collaboration is the key to success.
“It’s important to create your own sound, brand, and identity to ensure success but I honestly think more people should come together,” Lacey shared. “We are so much stronger in this industry when we genuinely support each other.”
Power is defined as, “the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events.” Kiya has certainly left an imprint on the music industry with her innovative approach to music making and branding.
“I definitely motivate my friends to keep going and diversify the bag,” she humbly declares. “It’s so wild cause I definitely see my influence in style, hair, vocal arrangement, and even brand strategy sometimes.”
When it comes to Lacey’s approach to creating, marketing her music and sharing with the world, she attributes brainstorming sessions to helping her bring her vision to life. More specifically, she always keeps a journal to write down her ideas.
Right now, her favorite journal reads: “Don’t overthink this shit.” Kiya’s partner Malcolm designed these custom journals, which has served as a reminder for her to be present and visualize her future.
“We actually sit down and discuss all of our ideas big, small, present day or future goals,” Lacey added. “That’s really helped me bring them to life!”
Kiya’s excited to continue creating, traveling and seeing more of the world.
“I love touring and seeing the world,” Lacey shared of what’s next for her. “I love to be able to support my family and friends. I want financial freedom for us all.”
As for the artists still forging their own unique pathways in music, Lacey leaves us with this advice.
“Lock in. Really LOCK IN. You have to really focus in on yourself. Forget the comparisons and try new things,” Kiya shared. “Don’t let one set back hold you down. You are capable of achieving your wildest dreams. Prioritize mental health. Stay true to yourself.”
Be sure to follow Kiya Lacey for more music, events, and delicious FRUTA
NEXT WAVE: BILL$
Written By: Sammy Approved | @thecnsamuel
Detroit rapper Bill$ is making waves for himself with pretty girl music, sounds to play on a sunny day and songs dedicated to loved ones. The next wave comes with a powerful presence fit for this month’s theme. Read more about how he makes music for himself, how he found power in the pivot and his personal formula to success.
Bill$ has carved out a sound that is unique to him and his experience. There’s some Midwest and East Coast influences peeking through Bill$’s music, which he’s surely gained inspiration from his upbringing in Detroit, Michigan and his time spent pursuing his undergraduate studies at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
“I have a degree in Biology from Howard and yet somehow I’m rapping and making it happen,” the rapper shared with us about his resilience.
As an artist, Bill$ finds inspiration by one of music’s biggest acts, Drake. He specifically draws to how Drake navigated the industry early on in his career. Bill$ finds Drake’s adaptability impactful, and he chooses to lean into that when it comes to making his own wave.
“I think his versatility is what shows up most in my music,” Bill$ shares about Drake’s artistic influence.
Bill$ has created a name for himself since his early days as a DJ. He speaks to the challenges he faced early on while transitioning from DJ to artist. Thought it was difficult for him to gain the respect and recognition, it seems he has finally found his way.
“I first got into music by being a DJ so at first it was pretty hard to get people to respect me as an artist,” Bill$ shared. “Now, I feel more people recognize me as an artist especially since I take myself and my art more serious than I did when I first started rapping.”
His consistency is admirable. Bill$ drops singles regularly, delivering clever lines over cinematic beats. His latest single “Cool” has an infectious sample that makes you want to hit your money dance. With one album titled $ponsorship Dolla$ released back in 2022 to on EP dedicated to the Pretty Girls, Bill$ is just getting started. As we are writing this, Bill$ has already announced his next single “Pocket Dropping” with artist Ocho on July 3.
Bill$’s star is rising with impressive Spotify listenership to end 2023. With over 184k streams, 39.5k listeners in 150 countries, he describes his community as “anyone who likes good music and wants to see the next star being made.”
Still, Bill$ makes music for himself first, and whoever else likes it is “just a plus.” He shares a few keys to his success so far, citing failure, focus and the freedom to create as the formula to navigating the business.
“I see the good in any situation,” Bill$ comments on his personal superpower. “There’s always somebody in a worst situation than yours so I always try to remember that and be grateful for my situation.”
He goes on to share that failure has been instrumental to his evolution as an artist saying, “really failure, I’ve only gotten from my mistakes and mishaps.”
Bill$ keeps the focus on the quality of his music. With a wide selection of new music and artists fans can choose from, Bill$ makes sure to stay ahead of the curve, creating noteworthy music that represents him and not “just a trendy sound.”
“I don’t like many people, soooooo it’s super important for niggas to know we are not the same,” Bill$ shares confidently of how he’s separate from the rest. “I’m also very competitive and I wanna be the best. That’s how you don’t get stuck in a box and grouped with people you actually have nothing in common with musically.”
Bill$ recommends a book titled Steal Like An Artist,” which discusses how nothing is new under the sun. When carving out a lane for himself, Bill$ recognizes that he must pull from his most authentic self, which is a culmination of all the music that’s come before him.
“Like the first table was just a large rock, somebody just made it wood and added legs,” Bill$ shared. “I feel like that’s how music is, I’m not looking to bring anything new because honestly I wouldn’t be giving you an authentic version of me.”
His formula to success is keeping content at the center. Bill$ credits being active with the success he’s seen so far. Once he started taking himself serious and treating himself as a rapper, he began to see true progress.
The gifted rapper has already made an impact on his peers since beginning his artist journey.
“My birthday is in July, and as a Leo this just makes sense to me,” Bill$ share about this months theme, Power. “I’d say I’ve influenced my peers to go for what they want. Most of my friends still don’t get it but I just think their not crazy enough about their dreams like I am.”
Despite personal misfortunes in his life, like losing his mom last year, Bill$ credits his little brother as his biggest inspiration to get up and “grind every day.” The rapper says making money is his favorite thing to do. So, it’s no surprise that even in the midst of heartbreak, he puts in the work to pursue his dreams.
“I really show too much love to people and I should stop but if I did then I wouldn’t be me,” Bill$ speaks to his solid, loving character.
In terms of his personal highlights, Bill$ was recently featured on music platform, “Ontheradar,” which he considers a major career highlight.
“Ontheradar was a big moment for me, I got a lot of new fans from that so I’m forever grateful for that,” he shares. “Other than that I’d have to say my most powerful career highlight is losing my mom, I feel like that turned me into my most vulnerable self and let me see things from a different perspective rather it’s good or bad.”
Turning pain into power is a unique and admirable skill that Bill$ embodies. That’s another trait that makes him a power player and the next wave in music.
As for his most powerful play yet, Bill$ believes a feature from an underground artist would push him farther.
“A feature from an underground artist would turn me up,” he shared. “Someone like Joony, KP SKYWALKA, or Babyfxce E. I think the next step for me is just expanding my fan base. I want the world to hear my music.”
As for what’s next, he is excited for the music to reach more listeners. Bill$ is confident that his next opportunity is right around the corner. For aspiring artists trying to find their own wave in music, Bill$ returns to a note we’ve heard before.
“Just be you. What’s for you will be for you and what’s not, won’t,” he eloquently concludes out interview.
Next Wave: Neila
Written By: Sammy Approved @thecnsamuel
Multifaceted artist Neila shares how her dynamic journey and authenticity has allowed her to thrive in an oversaturated music market. The talented rising star wears several hats as a singer, songwriter and recording artist. While some might label her an R&B singer and others may call her Pop, she prefers “R&POP.”
The gifted singer debuted her latest single, “Receipts” in April 2024. She released her last project Bite Me, Bitch in 2023, which features her hit single, “Impatient” with Capella Grey.
Neila, which is alien spelled backwards, aims for “world domination.” The South Florida artist continues to break barriers by building an unstoppable brand that feels authentic to who she is. Neila credits her authenticity to what, “keeps [her] brand alive.”
More recently, she landed a huge campaign with designer fragrance brand Mugler’s “Alien Hypersense,” which perfectly coincides with the brand she’s been building over the years.
When asked about the collaboration, she notes that, “It honestly fell in my lap. Perfect alignment.”
Despite her stage name’s foundation, the otherworldly songstress hails from planet Earth -- South Florida to be exact. Neila pays homage to her Jamaican and Bajan heritage as a first generation American, who was immersed in rich culture. Her style, cadence, and charisma oozes with the ethos of her Caribbean roots.
Neila has perfectly carved out a lane for herself, but she also has a “melting pot” of influences that she has studied over the years.
“I got into The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Queen when I was very young, like in middle
school,” Neila shared of her inspirations. “Their freedom of expression and their
seemingly lack of desire to blend in have always inspired me.”
She goes on to share that her influences expanded to artists like Pharrell Williams,
Missy Elliott and Tyler, the Creator, who have been “consistent sources of inspiration
musically, fashion-wise and artistically.”
When admiring Neila’s artistry, fans can’t deny the consistency and how she stretches
herself creatively to build a strong aesthetic and name for herself. The green hair, over-
the-top editorial looks, and originality speaks for itself.
“Blending music with fashion and aligning my art with a storyline are very important to
me,” Neila said of her mission through art and storytelling.
Neila attributes her knack for branding and creating a name for herself to attending college for music business. The singer made sure that she got her money’s worth for her degree and has been putting it to use ever since.
“I soaked up everything I could from those classes and applied it to myself and my brand,” she shared. “I study artists who’s branding really makes an impact. Everything connects and tells a bigger story.”
She also credits her stellar planning and organizational skills as the two keys to her success so far.
“I'm a huge planner! I can't stress that enough. Organization is key,” Neila shared.
The journey has not been short and sweet. Fans may see a flourishing brand now, but Neila has been working independently for years to make her dreams a reality. As a journalist and media personality, I have personally witnessed her evolution.
“Over the years, as I've discovered more and more about myself, I've incorporated it into my artistry,” Neila shares of her evolution. “I don't take ‘breaks’ from making music. I just keep going. I have hundreds of demos that may never be heard, but that consistency has made me a better songwriter, singer, and visual artist.”
This journey wasn’t short of insecurities and what some may consider “L’s,” but Neila explains why this made her a better songwriter and overall, a great recording artist.
“I used to be insecure about my writing ability when I first started making music,” Neila revealed. “At the beginning, I didn't have anyone to help me. So, out of necessity, I wrote and wrote. Now, I would consider myself a writer – it's one of my favorite things to do.”
She goes on to add how her online presence may appear to look effortless, but it hasn’t been a walk in the park. Neila works tirelessly to thrive as an artist and human being. She has recently been more candid online about the struggles that come with pursuing her dreams.
“I grind hard, the tears flow, the doubts creep in. All normal stuff,” Neila revealed. “I just wanted to be more transparent. People keep asking what label I'm signed to, and I gotta
be clear: my team and I are doing this all ourselves. Just imagine what we can achieve with a major label behind us!”
Neila expresses that her authenticity is how she’s been able to thrive and innovate in an oversaturated industry, where music is infinite. As a spiritual and multidimensional artist, she explains that with “Pluto in Aquarius, it’s time to forget the inauthentic, façade nonsense and just be yourself.”
As an intentional artist, she credits the universe for gifting her with ideas in her music and campaigns.
“I'm constantly receptive, so creative sparks or entire songs often just download into my head,” Neila revealed. “From there, I follow that creative current.”
In terms of her creative process, like many artists, she lives for a mood board.
“Pinterest is my go-to, and recently I've been using Canva to create decks as well,” Neila adds. “Sometimes, I'll even sketch ideas in my journal. I'm a big planner – the more I plan, the smoother the execution, organization, and release of my art into the world.”
With the rapid technological changes, she also urges artists to stay on top of technology if they want to thrive in the ever-changing market.
“Innovation and technology are going to be huge for the next 20 years,” she shared. “Get used to AI and use it to your advantage.”
Neila aims to take over the world with her music and beyond. She hopes to one day partner with a major label and continue studying her favorites like Tyler, The Weeknd, Travis Scott, and Kanye, who have been able to market their projects with the majors.
“The details, the way everything connects and leads back to the music and message,” Neila shares of their marketing strategies. “It's incredible.”
She also uses Beyoncé as another example of “top-notch marketing and storytelling.”
“Of course, I'm independent right now, so I can't pull off a Beyoncé or Weeknd budget,” Neila shared. “But I do what I can at the creative level the artist I mentioned do it and I'm lucky to work with some incredible creatives. Having a team that understands and believes in you as an artist is crucial.”
Neila’s team extends beyond her music and goes on to her support including family, friends and her spiritual team: God.
“Being supported helps you to keep going and stay focused,” Neila shared with love and gratitude.
Beyond the music, Neila aspires to thrive in her personal life through “peaceful relaxation.” She prioritizes time with family to recharge her soul. When she’s not creating music, she’s hitting the trails or soaking up some sun by the water like a true Caribbean queen.
“Nature’s my happy place,” Neila shared. “That's where I truly thrive.”
Neila also shared helpful tools and resources that allow her to restore balance and continue to thrive in and out of her career. She credits exercise, her spiritual routine and high-vibrational literature to maintaining her overall well-being.
“My mornings and nights are structured around a spiritual routine. Before checking my phone, I prioritize prayer, affirmations, meditation, and visualization,” Neila shared. “I’m an avid reader, particularly drawn to spiritual and self-help books. Sometimes I revisit the same book multiple times, finding new meaning at different stages in my life. Consuming high-vibrational literature and positive affirmations nourishes my mind and counterbalances the negativity that can permeate social media.”
For new listeners, Neila welcomes you with open arms. She believes her music community is made for “free thinkers.”
“I strive to create anthems that inspire listeners to feel confident and capable of achieving anything they set their minds to,” Neila offered.
Neila is most excited for new listeners to discover her music and she hopes to make them all fans.
“I dream of millions around the globe connecting with it [music],” Neila shared. “I'm incredibly grateful for my current fanbase, the 'Invaders,' and I'm ready to use my music to uplift and heal even more people. Philanthropy is another huge passion, and I can't wait to expand my efforts in that area. World-renowned artist, fashion icon, philanthropist – that's the vision!”
To continue to support Neila, be sure to share her music, add your favorites to your playlists and spread the word to your family and friends that your new favorite indie artist is an alien from outer space.
“Every little bit helps this dream come true,” Neila concludes our interview. Be sure to stream and purchase Neila’s latest single, “Receipts” here.

Next Wave: Old Orleans
Written By: Sammy Approved | @ChelseaSamuel
An artist with no bounds or limits, Old Orleans is the next wave. The New Orleans bred rapper, creative architect and master wordsmith has cultivated a space in music that allows him to thrive alongside the greats. With community, by living in his truth and utilizing all his gifts, Old Orleans has unlocked his personal cheat code.
The talented artist began creating and releasing his own music three years ago, but his creative pursuits go way back. Though he feels “like a baby” in the game, fans wouldn’t notice by his mature pen and masterfully curated sound.
“As far as just being a creative, I’ve been making art all my life,” Old Orleans comments on his creative journey. “My biggest thing is to just always start. That’s it. Not just saying ‘oh yea I want to get into this new thing’ but feeling not fully equipped or qualified to do so. Just go create and figure out how to get better as you go, and that’s how I’ve evolved. Constantly showing up for myself on a regular basis.”
Old Orleans is how he refers to his brand. He credits the name as a “playground,” where he visits to create in whichever medium he desires. Some of his friends may know him as Uncle Roy or just Ro. Old Orleans is the way he identifies creatively saying, “On a more metaphorical note, Old Orleans is an embodiment of artistic ventures that has no bounds or limits.”
In three years, Old Orleans has released four albums and several singles and EPs. Most recently, he released the “Don’t You Know Freestyle” with frequent collaborator Akeem Ali in March 2024. Old Orleans debuted his latest full length project Magnolia Symphony with producer Don Carrera back in December 2023. The nine-track project takes you on a ride from beginning to end, where he shares witty double entendres that will likely have to run back to fully grasp what he’s saying.
As fans experience the Old Orleans sound and visual aesthetic, they will definitely find inspiration from 70’s Soul, Disco and R&B like Con Funk Shun. They might also hear notes of 90’s Hip Hop stylings from artists like Camp Lo. Old Orleans mixes his love and influence he feels from the East to the West coast. Most importantly, his sound takes listeners on a journey through his city of New Orleans.
“I’m a gumbo pot of creativity,” he shared.
Old Orleans makes music for fans of Hip Hop and true lyricism. He says that his music is “for the people who like to chill but not be too cool to be goofy.” Those fans who aren’t afraid of vulnerability.
“You could throw me on a playlist full of 2009 blog era rappers and I’d blend in beautifully like I’d been making music since then,” he adds of his sound.
Uncle Roy realizes that showing up as his most authentic self is how he continues to not only exist but evolve. He emphasizes that he doesn’t have a desire to be perfect but hopes to show up in his truth while becoming better each day.
“Who I am online is who I am in person,” Roy declares. “I’m not trying to sell the idea of something to anyone.”
What comes naturally to Old Orleans, doesn’t necessarily come easily for most artists in the game. Real is rare, but Unc is here to remind us of our unique gifts in the world.
“The only thing I’ve been placed here to do is to remind people that your purest form of self is the most unique blessing you’ve been given to utilize through life,” he adds. “People will wholeheartedly appreciate and support you for being you.”
As an artist, Old Orleans manages to use all his gifts as a multi-hyphenate creative. When speaking on his process, he creates through problem solving. Since we met back in 2015, Roy spent his early days behind the camera capturing timeless photographs for other beloved artists like DC Young Fly, notable brands such as Base Butter, and his own self- portraits. All which authentically speak to who he and his subjects are in real life. He still wears this photographer hat to assist in sharing his own stories through music.
“I’m a visual artist first, and I understood while making music and releasing music is fun, no one will find it if you don’t put out any visuals,” Roy shared the importance of creating aesthetically pleasing visuals to accompany his sound. “So, I started shooting my own visuals that felt unique to my sound. Then I started to do more collabs with people I respect in music as well and that’s what helped create my lane that works specifically for the goals I have in this art form.”
Old Orleans credits relationship building to how he’s cultivated his online community. He discovered the most effective way to create an experience for his fans, which helps them to engage with his music digitally. The gifted artist hasn’t fully fleshed out his live experience, but he’s mastered a way to draw support online with several viral moments to prove it.
“You have to have a “product” that people want to feel apart of,” Roy educates us. “I haven’t performed live yet because I haven’t fully figured out that experience in person for people, but I’ve figured out what online experiences look like.”
The marketing mastermind shared what works best for him. The Old Orleans community appreciates his cohesive storytelling through captivating visuals and bars to pair.
“Every time I make a song I create a short video of the song that feels like a world where people can enjoy not just the music but the art of the environment I’ve placed them in,” he adds. “Once an audience of people feel welcome in my space, then I know they will
understand and appreciate me as an artist even more because they’ll feel connected to me. It’s relationship building at a massive scale, but it’s still just being genuine to yourself.”
When asked how Roy manages to wear so many hats (many of which we haven’t even covered), he answers with faith, community, and grounding.
“I’m constantly reminded by God and my community to go outside and touch grass, in a literal and metaphorical way,” he notes. “I create all day even when I’m not physically touching something, but I can only be inspired to do better if I put down the devices and engage with the people and things I love outside of making art. The world is art, so I have to remind myself to go look at the art outside of my own little world that I’m cultivating.”
Old Orleans acknowledges how hard it is to step outside of his own world sometimes but recognizes the impact it can have on how artists create and express.
“It gets hard to leave my own world sometimes because it’s fun over here,” he adds. “But what’s better is when you get to see all the other universes out there that allow the colors in your life to expand further.”
Roy thrives as an artist and creator through his knack for cultivating community and by staying authentic to himself, his art and recognizing the importance of personal evolution.
“Community to me is most important especially when the entire community is talented and can connect in more ways than I’ve imagined,” he shared. “I love being able to connect the dots all across the board to help people grow no matter how big or small they are.”
This is evident in his collaborations with other gifted artists like Ali, Carrera and Atlanta based artist Mudy. Old Orleans surrounds himself with like-minded creators, who are also living and creating by the same code of authenticity and pure talent.
“I stay authentic to my true self and understand how to evolve over time,” Old Orleans reminds us of how he flourishes in an oversaturated market. “The key is just having fun and not settling for whatever anyone else wants for you, but to remain true to the reason on why you create in the first place. As long as I’m always walking the path of peace and self- fulfillment, then I’ll always be satisfied with the fruits of my labor.”
Most recently, being authentic and sharing in community has blessed Old Orleans with a sync placement on “The Chi.” When asked how that opportunity came about, he gives credit to artist Remey Williams.
“He pretty much put that in rotation for me, ran down how music syncing worked and we got to it,” Roy shared. “Never imagined I’d have music on TV, and yet here we are. That was a dope moment for sure.”
With just three years under his belt, Old Orleans is happily here to stay. He hopes that he continues to build authentic and long-lasting relationships through music and beyond.
“I’m still new to it all, and I’m working with people I’ve been fans of before I even thought about making music,” he shared. “It’s just nice to be apart of the conversation of great artists out there now.”
Continue to support Old Orleans by sharing his music and content across social media, sending to friends and family, and purchasing merchandise when it becomes available.

Next Wave: Sonny Digital
Sonny Digital, the multi-platinum producer who has generated billions of streams across bangers for Drake, Future, Lil Uzi Vert, Beyoncé, Don Toliver and 2 Chainz, is now signed to Generation Now with the likes of Lil Uzi and Jack Harlow, as an artist.

The Michigan-born and Atlanta-based creator, who has shaped the culture with a series of smashes and at the same time earned widespread acclaim on a series of his own mixtapes and singles from The FADER, XXL and more, is turning the spotlight on every facet of himself.
Sonny Digital is showing the world his evolving musicality and who he is today. “In 2023, I’m still a producer, but I’ve always been an artist,” he states. “Overall, I’m just a creative person when it comes to anything musical. Sonny Digital is the producer, and Sonny is the artist. It’s no different from when I first started until today. Now, I just have a platform to show everyone the other side of my artistry.”
Along the way of producing records for others, he assembled what would become his debut album, Delores [Generation Now/Atlantic Records]. Referencing those family ties in the title, it brings everything full circle as he leaps forward sonically. “Dolores is my mom, and I’m just saying, I’m her son. She and my dad encouraged my music. We just never knew how far it would take me. With everything I’m speaking on in this project, the title just makes sense without me having to say too much.”
It practically felt predestined for him to do so. Originally from Nigeria, his dad harbored a passion for music—which Sonny naturally absorbed. At the same time, their heritage inspired him. “My father instilled the importance of making sure your family and the people around you are taken care of,” he notes. “It plays a big role in who I am.” Throughout his childhood, he embraced a diehard work ethic. His brother passed down a dusty MPC, and Sonny spent countless hours on it before perfecting his craft on Fruity Loops. Simultaneously, he honed his abilities by rapping over his own tracks with friends. “I was just giving out beats back then,” he laughs. Breaking into the business, he crafted six cuts for Gorilla Zoe’s King Kong in 2011 at barely 20 years old. However, his beat for YC’s “Racks” [feat. Future] changed everything. It eventually reached gold status, and UPROXX retrospectively noted, “the song that began Future’s rise to being one of hip-hop’s biggest stars only cost $300.”
As always, he lets the music do the talking. The first single “Wakenbake” [feat. Juicy J] instantly intoxicates with its hazy chant, “Wake up, get my blunts rolled.” Through plumes of smoke, he and Juicy J trade blazed-up bars as the beat unravels in an unpredictable rhythm. “I tried to challenge myself to rap over a more intricate beat,” he notes. “Juicy J has been my homie since day one. I wanted to show him love the same way he shows me love.” On “Gotta Slide,” a soulful string sample gives way to a glitchy bounce as he admits, “If my brother died, I swear to God I gotta slide.” The record is poetically raw and personal in nature. “I was rapping about the moment my boy PnB Rock had just died and it was capturing the feeling. I wanted to pay tribute to him with something good.”
With boundlessly creative beats, cinematic storytelling and lots of personal flair, Sonny is about to set the whole game on fire. “I’m trying to give you every side of who I am,” he leaves off. “Some days, I feel like rapping. Other days, I want to make beats or write songs for other people. I’m comfortable doing anything. That’s who I am.”

As a passionate singer, songwriter, guitarist and performer, Britni Ariel conquers every stage and heart that experiences her unique mix of cool sophistication and soul. Britni, possessing an undeniable quality that separates her from her contemporaries, is a product of Roswell, GA, a suburb on Atlanta’s Northside. From an early age, the gifted artist with an ability to touch people with her magical voice, placed a great emphasis on values such as discipline, hard work and perseverance.
Her grand artistic ambitions began when she was a young teenager performing in local shows and musicals. Britni was raised on an eclectic mix of musical genres that include neo-soul (Lauryn Hill), r&b (Brandy, Usher), pop (Mariah Carey) and soul (Amy Winehouse). These cultural icons have played a pivotal role in shaping her versatility and vulnerability as a vocal narrator and musician.
Those influences led to Britni drawing inspiration to experiment with different creative formulas to interpret stories with honest emotions that authentically connect with people.
As she continued to develop her own distinct style and sound, Britni gave herself space to mature by attending and graduating from Georgia State University. She obtained a degree in Communications and Music. Prior to getting her traditional education, Britni also gained real world experience on the other side of the industry working behind the scenes at music venues, recording studios, publishing companies and independent labels.
While she continued to study her craft and nurture her creativity, encompassing writing new content and evolving as an artist and human being, Britni became a student of the game. During this period of self-discovery, she landed an administrative position at an independent music management and publishing company where she helped to assist the careers of major hip-hop clients such as Metro Boomin, Sonny Digital, Tasha Catour and others.
The opportunity broadened her musical horizons and ignited her own entrepreneurial pursuits. In 2018, she founded Britni’s Bandwagon, an artist development and event production company. In this new professional role, she connected and coached independent producers, artists and songwriters and cultivated new spaces for creators to make music and organic connections. The following year, she established a publishing company, Bandwagon Publishing, and began vocal producing and songwriting with artists in addition to curating her audible art.
In 2020, Britni released her debut single "Secret Lover,” co-produced, written and vocally produced by her. She also debuted a fresh new sound, which was a genre-blend of soul and pop; both nostalgic and refreshing. With Britni’s storied resume in the music business, composing lyrics, producing vocals and entertaining, she’s determined to build her legacy as a ‘Jill of all trades,’ one song at a time.
In 2023, she released her latest single, “FEARS,” that tells the story of moving past fears of success and failure, halting comparison and letting go of other’s opinions in order to chase your wildest dreams. Through releasing music, she wants to also release any inhibitions that prevent her from bringing her best self to her art. “I bring love, the power of live instrumentation, storytelling and positivity to r&b and soul music.” Building an empire and impacting lives in the process, Britni’s is a bandwagon we suggest that you jump on.

NEXT WAVE: Illa J, The Illest
Written By: Tamiko Hope
lla J is ill, as in dope. The rapper, composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer, has always been possessed by music - rhyming it, singing it, playing it and making it. An all-encompassing prolific musician with a deep reverence for the culture, he has only recently become aware of his own potential. The youngest of his collective siblings, Illa J’s childhood was filled with love and music.
The family patriarch played the piano and upright bass, while the matriarch was a singer and both sets of Illa J’s paternal grandparents played the piano. His older brother is the late hip-hop visionary J Dilla, hence the semblance in his stage moniker, who was known for his innovative production and prolific mic skills that continue to be dissected and duplicated till this day.
Born and raised in working-class Detroit, Illa J grew up in a household that placed a great emphasis on values such as community, consistency and creativity, which drove him to have an undeniable focus in his professional and personal pursuits. He mastered the piano by learning how to read music at an early age however being musically-inclined was baked into his DNA.
He grew up listening to classic records his parent’s played; from Motown icons like James Brown, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, to exclusive a cappella jazz groups such as The Manhattan Transfer and Les Double Six. These diverse genres had a significant impact on Illa J’s career, broadening his own musical roots. He has taken his job of pushing musicianship forward, bridging the gap between Gen Xers and Millennials, very seriously.
An electrifying and uncompromising live entertainer, the brilliant MC’s gifts have taken him all over the globe making him a transatlantic success with a loyal fanbase that spans from London and Italy to Germany and Japan. Yet despite his credentialed resume, headlining his own tours as well as touring with Slum Village and opening for Talib Kweli and having his name appear alongside Miles Davis on the collaborative Robert Glasper single “They Can’t Hold Me Down,” Illa J is an emerging artist in the States. His desire for recognition within his homeland began to manifest itself in 2017 when he delivered the album Home that featured the single “Sam Cook.” Illa J performed the Motown-esque arrangement for his COLORS BERLIN segment where he flexed his singing and rapping chops over a pre-recorded instrumental. This artistic fine-tuning and attention to detail can be experienced on his latest offering No Traffic, which references how he feels about his place in rap. “I’ve created my own lane in hip-hop, even though my reach extends far beyond the genre. I play all of the instruments you hear; I don’t sample anything. I come from a well-respected legacy and I authentically care about the music. I follow my gut and keep it pushing.”
On the lead single of the same name, what started out as simply an intro by Frank-n-Dank talking their talk, Illa J was so moved by their vocal contribution that he felt compelled to build a beat around it and add his own lyrical heat. No Traffic is an exquisite, magical and spiritual sound revolution that’s delivered with authenticity at the highest level. It’s equally inspirational and vibey with Illa J dropping clever gems that are guaranteed to produce smiles and an aura of feel-good positivity. An amalgamation of soul, jazz, funk, rap and everything in between, Illa J is pushing boundaries and buttons. “For me, music is a vibe; a universal language that everybody can relate to. That’s how it should be defined.” Period.
