The Blvck Buttafly is a singer, songwriter and entertainer, who is a self-proclaimed lover girl. Her success as an artist has drawn the attention of super producer Timbaland and landed her writing on some of your favorite TV shows and films. Blvck is soaring high and invites everyone to fly.

The Blvck Buttafly describes herself as a “top tier lover girl.” While some girls make sad girl or hot girl music, Blvck prides herself on making lover girl music.

“It’s not always happy love, because there are so many sides to love,” she shared. “So I sing about it all.”

The lesbian identifying singer writes songs as a woman loving another woman. She describes it as a different world from what fans are accustomed to listening to.

“Either you are learning about this world or you are feeling like you have finally found music where you’re not switching out the pronouns to resonate with the music,” Blvck revealed.

As for the name, The Blvck Buttafly is a representation of us all. The singer and songwriter shared that there was no special thinktank happening when coming up with her stage name as it just kind of came to her.

“At that time I had no rhyme or reason, it felt like it just dropped into my head and boom,” she talked about her stage name. “The underlying meaning of my stage name represents metamorphosis. Which is also the title of the third installment of my 4 part sonic trilogy, ‘THE MAKINGS OF A BUTTAFLY.’”

In Blvck’s eyes, every person experiences their own metamorphosis. So, her stage name resonates with us all.

“We are all BUTTAFLIES. Interestingly enough, I believe we get so caught up in the beauty of a BUTTAFLY that we forget how long it took them to get to that beautiful stage in their life,” she offered. “We’re in awe of the finished product, not realizing that what came before it is also a beautiful process.”

As humans, Blvck understands that we all have life experiences, and we experience life differently based upon our perspective.

“None of who I am today was developed overnight,” she disclosed. “It has taken a lot of losses, to a few wins, to a lot of hope, to a lot of let downs, and a lot of overcoming moments to just be in the beginning of my career.”

Blvck’s proud of her four-part trilogy, “THE MAKINGS OF A BUTTAFLY,” which she shared isn’t just a compilation of four projects. Instead, it’s a way for fans to listen and experience her growth.

“If I could put what my harmonies sound like in visual form, it would look like a flutter of butterflies gracefully floating around,” Blvck adds about her sound and stage name. “So time, in combination with learning myself in the process, has ultimately shown me why I am THE BLVCK BUTTAFLY.”

Blvcck’s latest single was released back in March 2024 titled “Slow Motion.” She has an eclectic sound that welcomes the hearts of those who desire to love and feet that love to move. Though she’s making music as a queer artist, Blvck’s art is for everyone.

“Just as heterosexual love songs are expected to relate to myself, with some pronoun substitutions,” she laughs. “And hey, sometimes I have songs where I don’t mention a gender at all! Nevertheless, it's all about love for me.”

Her upbeat music provides an atmosphere for lovers to dance and groove. Blvck’s last EP The Formation is the perfect 7-track introduction to The Blvck Buttafly’s sound. Music fans can scream at the top of their lungs and jump up and down from their seats.

“I love for my music to have bounce,” Blvck reveals. “If that track does not have bounce, I am bouncing to the next track! I love for people to have a good time and really feel the vibrations that are coming from these frequencies. When people play my music I want them to scream and pop up from their seats, run to the dance floor and dance like they are lost in space and time.”

Blvck’s end goal is about making people feel good when listening to her music. She leans into being her authentic self.

“In this life that you have, you show love for yourself by living your life for you,” Blvck declares. “So overall, I think me being myself unapologetically doesn’t solely speak to the LGBTQ+ community, it speaks to communities across the board.”

When it comes to making music, Blvck isn’t concerned with the oversaturated industry. She notes Lauryn Hill as one of the greatest artists of our time with only one album to show for it.

“I am a quality over quantity type of artist. I can really pass on a swing and a miss if I have the opportunity and the time to have a good first swing.” Blvck notes. “At the end of the day, this is art. I don’t know of any artist that will give you an “okay” painting just because they want a ton of paintings in their gallery.”

Blvck believes that if the song is quality, it can sell itself. As for her artistry, there aren’t many singers who give Pop or R&B music what she offers.

“If I were to ask someone to name a black Pop/R&B female artist who is a lesbian, and sings to only women in her songs, I think they’d have a pretty hard time trying to do that,” Blvck laughs.

Blvck’s approach to cultivating her sound has taken a non-traditional approach. She describes her sound as eclectic and that her music takes on many forms throughout several genres. Blvck credits her thoughtful harmonies to the unique sound she’s skillfully crafted.

“If anyone would say that I am breaking the rules, it would probably be due to my choice of a vocal approach, lead or background,” she adds.

It’s a similar feeling that her inspirations lend to her. From Disney theme parks to artists Missy Elliott, Babyface and Victoria Monét, Blvck is deeply inspired by great talent and the art around her.

“I frequent Disney parks, yes because I love Disney, but also because I am inspired the moment I step inside of the park,” Blvck shared of her inspiration. “Disney was created by someone who had a dream. And who fought tooth and nail to see his dream through. Though Walt’s journey wasn’t easy, at all, he kept going. Even when people doubted him, when people thought he was crazy, or when his vision seemed out of reach, he stayed consistent.”

Blk is inspired by “anyone who dares to dream and be consistent with that dare.” The singer is reminded that anyone can dream, but it takes a special grit to practice consistency towards a dream.

Though Blvck has never had a vocal or dance lesson, she taught herself how to entertain by watching her favorite artists. She recalls watching throwback Usher music videos, learning the choreography and ultimately adopting his clean and smooth style of dance. The gifted entertainer shared a few of her visual inspirations like all-star talents Missy Elliott and Janelle Monae.

“I have always been inspired by Missy Elliott and Janelle Monae. I love when artists also express themselves visually,” Blvck shared about her inspirations. “Janelle and Missy do it unapologetically, never missing the mark. They are literally iconic aliens with boundless imagination and I am incredibly inspired.”

As a vocalist, Blvck pulls inspiration from The Clark Sisters, Brandy, Lil’ Mo and Coco from SWV.

“Harmonies play an intricate part in how to choose to produce my vocals on a record,” she adds regarding her vocal style. “And not just any kind of harmonies, I want them to touch your soul and make you feel good.”

The singer and songwriter draws songwriting inspiration from Missy, Static Major, Sean Garrett, LaShawn Daniels, Dianne Warren, Victoria Monét, David Foster, and Babyface. Blvck emphasizes the power of words and how we use them.

“Considering all that it takes, I have always been inspired by Michael Jackson and Beyoncé. Outside of classic records and being some of the best performers of all time, their tenacity, whether it be on stage, in the booth, wherever, they have an unwavering dedication to their artistry,” Blvck shared of her greatest influences.

Blvck shares that her biggest takeaway from Michael and Beyoncé has been their consistency and how they push boundaries.

“Their work ethic, tireless to become timeless,” she concludes.

Our next wave talent, Blvck, has seized several opportunities to level up throughout her career. When speaking on the time Timbaland discovered her unique sound, Blvck shares how that moment also taught her about consistency.

“It took me to another level. I had a flood of opportunities, and still have opportunities today,” Blvck adds. “I got some exposure, gained new fans, I learned a lot, and I am still learning. The moment with Timbaland definitely taught me what consistency will get you.”

Blvck’s gifts have expanded her reach to music sync placements in TV and film. She has written for hit series like “The Chi,” “Raising Kanan,” and “Ghost.” The Buttafly talks about how writing for TV and film has become a huge part in shaping her and her career.

“I remember being so hesitant in the beginning because I was so hung up on writing songs for myself and other artists, and also I had never written for TV or Film before,” Blvck revealed. “Then I checked myself like, this is an opportunity to grow and learn, so I did it.”

Blvck is grateful she didn’t allow self-doubt to deter her from a multitude of great opportunities.

“It’s actually made me a better and more experienced creative overall,” she adds.

Buttafly knows there’s a market for every artist despite the influx of music being consumed by fans. She finds it laughable when people say, “Well, there’s no market for that.”

“I truly believe at that moment they have forgotten how big the world is. And you can’t say, the marketing isn’t buying from an artist like that, because who have you named that is specific to the description,” Blvck shared. “Just because something doesn’t exist to you doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist.”

Blvck has experienced great success simply by living in her truth. She talks with us about how she spent a lot of her career being told not to sing to women.

“Even to this day, I cannot seem to grasp the idea of others who believe there is no market for someone like myself, a female, singing to other women,” Blvck shares. “I mean, how can someone reject someone who is singing out of love?”

Being forward and prideful about her lesbian reality has garnered her the most success she’s ever had in music. She also understands the significance of how singing about her lesbian experiences allows for other people within the community to feel seen.

“Me, being my best lesbian self, singing about my lesbian experiences, is my form of art that I share with the art community,” she adds.

It’s an inspiring way of advocating for herself and the LGBTQ+ community and any community that encourages people to be authentically themselves.

Blvck continues to make an impact in music and beyond. For the past four years, she’s been diving into other parts of entertainment working on her own animated series. Her approach to writing and creating this animated series is what sets her apart from other popular shows out now.

“I know this is the next big franchise,” Blvck reveals. “You know we had DC Comics, then Marvel, Star Wars, then Harry Potter, and now my animated series.”

Beyond the hard work she has been putting into her creations, Blvck’s level of work ethic on her business and brand is something to marvel in. The rising entertainer has written out a 100-page business plan for herself that could give someone an entire map of her career for the next 12 years.

“My personal experience in the entertainment industry, between music, TV, and film, has given me a wide and different perspective, creating something that I believe forms a fair and lucrative playing ground for all sides of the entertainment industry,” Blvck adds of what’s next in her career.

Blvck recently attended a Grammy conversation in LA with one of her inspirations Victoria Monét, D’Mile, and the legendary Jimmy Jam moderating. She was naturally thrilled to be attending an event with such iconic artists, but what they left her with is what she hopes to pass along to the next wave of talent.

“Jimmy Jam spoke to the crowd and said something I really needed to hear, especially at that time in my life,” Blvck shared. “He said, ‘Make the music you want to hear, and expect people to follow.’ That, for me, was one of the biggest ‘aha’ moments in my career, ever.”

Artists tend to struggle with that, focusing on crafting music for the masses. Blvck’s advice is recognizing, “you are the trend and people will gravitate most to what resonates highly.”

It all goes back to authenticity, and not working overtime to satisfy the market. That’s exactly how The Blvck Buttafly is leaving a lasting impact in music and entertainment.

“I grew into this, and I am still growing,” Blvck proclaims. “If anything I love being a student, I love stepping back to absorb information as if I was a beginner.”
