“My music is something to sink into, it’s something to sit with,” Makenna explains. “I create with the intention of taking emotional weight and putting it into something tangible. Music making is like an honest conversation with myself.”

Makenna’s sound is rich with guitar and harmony, which she now joins with the sounds of viola, inviting listeners into a space of reflection and emotional resonance. Her influences are a mix of family and discovery.

For fellow artists seeking to carve their own path, she advises: “Listen to the force that guides you to create, instead of aiming to appeal to the masses. Also, don’t shame yourself for not always feeling that creative spark. With time away from your craft comes life experiences to write about.”

Launched during hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, REVOLT World was built with a clear purpose: to shift the culture forward. And to be clear, that shift isn’t only about bringing out the biggest names on stage—it’s about providing access to conversations, resources, and connections that can turn moments into sustainable careers.

Beyond performances, past guests have tuned in for a host of live tapings—like the Assets Over Liabilities chat with Lauren London, CultureVersations on RICO charges and justice reform, and even wellness offerings like meditation and sound baths.

On the fashion and industry front, Jim Jones and Groovey Lew broke down hip-hop’s lasting impact on style, while celebrity stylists Law Roach and Kollin Carter discussed the complexities of fashion today. Meanwhile, artists like Moneybagg Yo, Saucy Santana, Lady London, King Combs, and Yung Miami hit the stage—illustrating the dual nature of the event as both a cultural celebration and educational epicenter.

By 2024, REVOLT World expanded significantly, with a record-breaking 35,000 attendees and a broader media presence under the theme We Create the Future. Drink Champs delivered a surprise live episode with Method Man, Ari Fletcher and Lil Duval teamed up for a comical food tasting experience, and the Healed Girl Pod anchored the weekend in needed mental health dialogue.

One of the most transformative components remains The Opportunity Center, which last year hosted over 750 hours of mentoring and career development. Inside, you’ll find rooms unpacking brand partnerships, others combing through the mechanics of publishing, and mentor sessions with producers and A&Rs guiding artists through the steps of growth.

For up-and-coming creatives, that level of access makes a real difference. Most festivals operate like flashy showcases—but REVOLT World feels different. It feels like it was built to equip and inspire.

And maybe that’s the point. REVOLT World reminds you that your dreams in music and media aren’t too far out of reach. In fact, the people who walked that path before you—and with you—are often the ones ready to help. Inside this space, you’re pushed to think bigger, and support echoes from a culture invested in your success.

Another REVOLT World weekend is on the horizon, slated for September 20–22. If you’ve been waiting for a sign to shake things up this fall—consider this it. Head to their website for full details and start planning your experience.

“I started my musicianship journey at 11 years old,” she shared. “Even as a shy child, I knew that music felt a little different to me. I couldn’t always express how I felt, but when I sang, I knew exactly what emotions were running through my body.”

Her sound lives in feeling—soulful and raw, always reaching for the kind of authenticity that can’t be faked. “If the feeling is off, then it doesn’t matter how good the song is—it won’t be able to fully touch someone,” O’Brie says. “The community I’ve started is full of real music lovers. People that, if they didn’t have music in their life, it would never feel complete.”

O’Brie’s inspirations trace a wide lineage. From Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Lauryn Hill to Rihanna, Willow, and Erykah Badu, she has many musical muses. Yet some of the most profound influences came from her own family. She pulled from church aunts singing with conviction, a band director who introduced her to jazz, and friends she jammed with who taught her about freedom in sound. All of it shaped her into the artist she is now: grounded, evolving, and deeply intentional.

The 21-year-old rapper from the Westside of Atlanta is blending new-school flair with a heavy dose of ATL nostalgia. With clever nods to athleisure brand Lululemon and a beat lifted from legend OJ Da Juiceman’s “Wham Bam,” PLUTO pays homage to ATL’s millennium-era icons while confidently charting her own course.

After “Whim Whammie” blew up on TikTok earlier this year, PLUTO’s momentum hasn’t let up. She was named Billboard’s Rookie of the Month and has earned co-signs from heavyweights like Lizzo, Sexyy Red, and Lil Baby. After a run on Lil Baby’s tour, she followed up with “Pull Yo Skirt Up,” a nod to Soulja Boy’s Donk, which sparked another viral wave thanks to a dance challenge boosted by food reviewer Keith Lee.

Even in today’s social media–driven era, where TikTok trends and viral dances often take center stage, you can still spot a blueprint rooted in Atlanta’s DNA. There’s a pattern—an energy that really feels unique to ATL. I see it in PLUTO. I’ve seen it in Latto. In 21 Savage. Beyond algorithms, there’s this sort of shared sense of strategy, coolness, and retention power that keeps the city at the forefront.

Atlanta’s music scene has always thrived on community, not just individual stars. When I look at modern acts like Latto, 21 Savage, Gucci Mane, or PLUTO, it’s clear they’re working from a long-standing blueprint—one that’s deeply rooted in the city’s culture of collaboration and collective pride.

That blueprint began in the early ’90s with Organized Noize, the production trio of Rico Wade, Ray Murray, and Sleepy Brown. Recording out of what they called “The Dungeon” (a basement studio in East Point), they crafted a sound that blended Southern soul, funk, and live instrumentation with hip-hop beats—redefining what Southern rap could be. Their work catapulted Outkast and Goodie Mob into national figures, flagging how Atlanta stands on its own—a move that didn’t need to follow the steps of L.A. or New York.

That ethos of shared space, shared goals, and support was carried into the next generation. Today, artists like PLUTO, Latto, 21 Savage, and Gucci Mane are all part of that same continuum. Their collaborations feel more like conversations based on mutual respect and a common background than just another feature.

But even with that set in stone, the journey isn’t always smooth.

PLUTO was supposed to link with Latto on the “Whim Whammie” remix. But after Latto found out PLUTO had tensions with YK Niece—best known for her viral “I’m talkin’ ’bout innit” ad-lib and verse—she decided to step back. Latto reportedly urged PLUTO to lean into unity, and in the end, she chose not to appear on the track.

Social media had a field day with that drama, with people split between backing PLUTO’s decision to move on and appreciating Latto’s big-sister energy, even if the message didn’t land. Since then, though, PLUTO and YK Niece have managed to share the stage and move forward without all the weird energy.

Even with all the noise, PLUTO remains focused—and honestly, that’s what makes her feel like such an Atlanta artist to me. She still got her moment at this year’s Birthday Bash, which feels like a rite of passage. She’s kept up with more viral hits like “Pull Yo Skirt Up” and dropped her debut album, BOTH WAYS.

What I love most is that her sound feels like home. It’s ratchet, it’s fun, and a little chaotic in the best way—but it’s so true to the city.

Raised in a home where creativity and practicality often clashed, Cooley still found a way to carve out space for her art while navigating personal upheaval. From being kicked out of her parents’ house, unemployment, and supporting her partner through a federal prison sentence, the story is deeply layered and influences the sound of King Cooley.
Summer’s here and in spite of the heatwaves and every other wild thing unraveling in America, what better time to be reminded of a season that actually brings good vibes and gives you an excuse to pull your homebody friends outside for some of the best outdoor celebrations and live music— festival season.

Ironically, the festival scene has evolved a lot over the years, with many of our favorites we once counted on, like Trillectro in DC– a scene focused on highlighting emerging talent and blending music genres (hence the “lectro” nodding to electronic), or Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago that gave space to alternative sounds across the board including hip-hop, are sadly long gone. These festivals opened up the doors for some of the newer events we see popping up today.

These festivals opened up the doors for some of the newer events we see popping up today.

The experience itself also seems to have shifted. Now it’s not just about the lineup anymore, festivals have become these sort of immersive playgrounds packed with interactive art, curated spaces, and plenty other creative outlets to keep thousands of music goers tapped in as they camp out waiting on their favorite acts to hit the stage.

Yet, not all hope is lost. There’s actually a few festivals that have stayed true to their roots, and a few newer ones that are stepping up with just as much energy. Spaces like Afropunk continue to hold it down, especially for those who live within the alternative sound world, or Coachella still brings out the big names across the music scene. But beyond the giants, there are some shows that are putting their cities and homegrown talent on the map.

What started as a celebration to promote their clothing line and Earth Day in LA, Broccoli City Festival has turned into the marquee event for the DMV area since 2013. The move from LA to DC was intentional—meant to promote environmental awareness and health issues in the Black community, and over the years it has grown into something much bigger. They’ve teamed up with Live Nation Urban, booked some of the greats like Kendrick Lamar before he exploded and helped usher in the rise of other talent like Rae Sremmurd, Ari Lennox, and Don Toliver. What really puts Broccoli City in their own lane is the way they stay connected to the city. Alongside national names, you’ll see local DC faves like Fat Trel or Shy Glizzy hit the stage as homegrown talent.

One thing Atlanta will do is provide you with top tier live music experiences. The city’s stacked with talent, different outlets, and music creatives who have long been tastemakers in the music industry. The thing that stands out about One Music Festival though, it’s the ultimate blend of new school and old school, making the event feel like a big block party plopped right in the middle of Central Park where the blended generation of aunties and cousins can all have a pleasurable experience.

Since 2010, it’s brought together an eclectic mix of urban artists from Janet Jackson to Pharell, to the Isley Brothers. There’s also space carved out for local talent, small-businesses to sell their products, and activities that get fans excited for talent planning to hit the main stage. It feels like a true celebration of the culture and is a must-visit if you’re an emerging artist or just spending a weekend in ATL.

Afropunk has always been more than a music festival, but a cultural movement. Born in Brooklyn and now hosted in cities like Atlanta, Johannesburg, and Paris, Afropunk creates space for Black artists, creatives, and fans who exist outside the mainstream. It’s the go-to for alternative sounds, experimental fashion, and non-judgy self-expression.

Musically, Afropunk is all over the map in the best way — pulling from punk, soul, hip-hop, Afrobeats, and everything else in between. Artists like Solange, Kaytranda, and Moses Sumney have all graced the stage, really proving the range of different sounds. Afropunk builds on community in its own way and it’s one of the most intentional and unconventional festival experiences out there.

Chicago has always been a city that births culture-shifting artists, Kanye West, Chance the Rapper, Lupe Fiasco, but it hasn’t always had a music festival for the city’s youth. That’s where Lyrical Lemonade’s Summer Smash Festival comes into place. Launched by Lyrical Lemonade and Cole Bennett, it’s one of the fastest growing hip-hop festivals in the country, known for its visuals and lineups that mix big names with rising stars.

Before even thinking about stepping into a booth, Erica McCauley (TheArti$t) was rooted in movement. The Jersey native’s first love was Hip-Hop and Contemporary dance. “Going from a dancer to a singer was actually quite shocking,” she shared in an earlier interview. “As a kid, I didn’t have it in my head to become an artist, I just knew I loved music and I loved dancing and I was enjoying every bit of that.”

TheArti$t’s recording journey kicked off in 2018 when friends encouraged her to get in the booth after hearing how surprisingly well she sings, leading to the debut of her first EP, Arti$t: Take One in 2020. And while she’s always used visuals to reel in people through her moves, painting, or fashion, or style (seriously, what can’t she do!?), TheArti$t creates her music with full-body honesty. “I feel like art manifests in my work just with everything. Art is just who I am on the inside and outside; in front of the camera or off the camera.”

Growing momentum eventually led to the release of her viral hit, Sober, which did numbers on TikTok in 2023, even landing on Spotify’s “Fresh Finds R&B Best of 2023” list. The movement kept in flow, and the following year she was chosen as one of South by Southwest Music Festival’s official artists, performing live twice during their 2024 showcase.

“The Journal I Didn’t Know I Needed”

As someone who often turns to music for grounding, coming across TheArti$t’s discography feels like the journal I didn’t know I needed. It’s something so profound and reassuring hearing someone name feelings you’re still learning how to express. In that same regard, watching someone bold enough to push against societal pressures to choose one identity when you’re actually okay with embracing all your talents, it’s refreshing. Her sensibility and revolt in the name of art reminds me of present day artists like Teyana Taylor or SZA, women who really stretch what it means to be vulnerable and versatile, showing us that you can take up space in all the ways that matter to you and the right people will follow.

Who I Am and Where She’s Headed

Who I Am and Where She’s Headed

TheArti$t comes in hot on her latest project Who I Am with “Better as Friends,” a track that, despite its soothing sound, doesn’t sugarcoat a thing. It’s raw. She straight-up tells her love interest: “I know you wrapped up in us, but baby don’t be. If I say I’m looking for love, it’s a beautiful lie.” It’s the kind of line that gets the lovers riled up because it’s a warning so calm in tone, with an impact that cuts deep.

But what makes the genre-blending project compelling is how her tough exterior on the first song slowly softens as the tracks play on. On songs like Ghost and Gravity, you hear her start to wrestle with the pain of distance. In Ghost, she questions why her lover walks away, fantasizing about being close again. While Gravity feels like she’s completely surrendering to love, unintentionally being pulled toward something deeper, as she admits, “I’m out my element.”

It’s beautifully contradictory and just deeply human. Because if you think about real love, especially in its early or uncertain moments, the experience isn’t monolithic. Sometimes we push people away in the name of self-preservation. Sometimes we say we’re not ready, even when everything in us wants to be seen. TheArti$t thoughtfully encapsulates that push and pull with a level of honesty that feels authentic and reminiscent to all the lovergirls and loverboys.

Who I Am proves TheArti$t isn’t afraid to show the messy middle. That recipe of honesty feels nostalgic of old school and 90s R&B. Love odes like Anita Baker. Vulnerability of Brandy. TheArti$t’s modernized take is what I think makes her rise worth watching and combats the never-ending stereotype that R&B is dying.

These days, TheArti$t is having a few full-circle moments and is starting to receive her flowers. She’s been selected as a regional headliner for Newark Pride, a big win as a Jersey native whose work speaks so directly and pays homage to her upbringing and hometown. For Black Music Month, she was also recently spotlighted in B Code Media’s Future of Black Music showcase happening across four cities–a vibrant event showcasing emerging Black talent while celebrating culture, creativity, and community.

With a voice that shape-shifts across genres and a presence that lights up a room, the Atlanta-based genre-bender is crafting a sound that’s nostalgic yet entirely new.

“I would describe my music as a play on all things nostalgic, but experimental,” she says. “I’m something like a genre bender.”

Keypsiia has created genre-bending music and mentally stimulating art for the stage and the soul. Whether it’s children vibing to her hooks or elders connecting to her soulful storytelling, Keypsiia’s music is built for everybody. Her music journey started with her single “Crush” in 2023, a debut that changed her entire world and introduced a new era of Southern artistry—equal parts experimental and homegrown.

“I’ve been able to stay on stage regularly while also getting spins nationwide on the radio,” she added. “Now, I’m being presented bigger opportunities from the work I’ve put in these last 2 years. I’m looking forward to how this year sets me up for phase 3 of this journey.”

“I’m just excited to see the seeds I plant in people become trees that bear their own fruit,” Gilkey answered. “’m excited to create worlds. I want “Fruit Music” to turn into something global. I’m excited to build a legacy that uplifts people long after I’m gone. And to connect with other visionaries who move with love, strategy, and soul. The future is golden, and I’m walking in alignment.”

As he continues to cultivate this movement with intention and depth, Jahi leaves us with this: “Don’t chase the wave, become the current. Treat your art like a sacred mission, not a trend. Study the greats, but don’t copy, create. Protect your energy, trust divine timing, and never be afraid to be different, which is just being yourself. The world doesn’t need another version of what already exists. It needs you, the most unapologetic, highest-frequency version of you.”
